I have read other reviews on Symi and would like to place you in my picture of Symi.
Having travelled to the island twice, not a big island at that to go to twice, but very well worth the time and trouble of getting there.
Our first trip we were met at the harbour and shown to Captain Morgans apartments above the gold shop. You then realise that the roof room is a must for the visitors, if you mention that you have that roof space you get "Oh we have tried for that for a couple of years, you are so lucky" And guess what we were.
Our rep had told us about the Kala Strata and worned us of the steep steps but the view was just OH...........You just have to keep stopping and looking. Half way up is the piano bar, nice for a drink, a little on the pricey side but again a view worth the money.
Keep going to the top and you come to the Plastic Chairs. There are two bars here, but we just stayed at Yannis bar. We had a drink and Yannis asked where er would be eating. Next door is Georgios and he reccommended that to us.
We went in and you are invited to look in all the pots that they have cooking, choose what you want. They have the grill going for souvlaki and if it is in the pots or on the grill you can have it. We stayed and ordered and the food was just great. The locals sentd the children there for hteir supper/meals and there is a strream of tin foil wrapped parcels making the way along from the restaurant to home. None of the K.F.C. here.
We ate there every night and on one second night a donkey arrived in the the restaurant to be sang to by the locals "Happy birthday" and as quick as it arrived it went again.
Symi is such a peaceful island and if you get the chance to visit would fully reccommend. You have to be aware that they don't have any water on the island so it arrives in the harbour by boat and is then pumped around the island. If the boat is late on water in the taps when you wake up.................so what you have water in the fridge to make a cuppa or visit Yannis he will make you a drink.
The island tour is a must, by boat. Take the tip of sitting under the cover on the boat it gets very hot in the heat of the day and that space is at a premium.
Under Captain Morgans is a super gold shop which sells hand made items, not that you find in great supplies. If you stay in Captain Morgan apartments you do enjoy a discount, which my husband took advantage of when getting me a 49th birthday pressy. Everytime I wear it it brings back memories of a great stay.
Take the plunge, go to Symi and stay out of the harbour if you can during the day but be about at night when the day trippers have left.
Bliss................
