It was my honeymoon to Madiera, (instead of visiting Thailand!)and we were to depart from Gatwick to Madiera on the first Tuesday flight provided by Tap Air Portugal.
My husband and I were very excited so we checked our bags in at the TAP Air Portugal desk which was so easy, I would say less than 5 minutes we were walking away to have a cup of coffee and wait to be called through to departure.
The Customer Service representitive asked the usual questions did you pack your bags yourself?, checked our passports, stuck the stickers on the suitcase, checked the size of our hand luggage, and then gave us our boarding cards, wished us a nice flight and gave us directions to the shops and duty
free.
So of we toddled grinning and cuddling each other thinking how easy that was and what a good start we are having.
The time came and our flight number TAP004 was being called through (I am sorry I can not remember what time of day it was, but I know it was a sensible time, not arriving at 2am, I think it was early afternoon to arrive at about 6pmish.)
We hurried through the security checks - Few I didn't sent alarms off, some how I always have to go through twice!!, and onto down the decending corridors onto the boarding rooms.
We arrived in the seating area and sat down. My husband noticed that they where giving out free drinks of wine, orange juice and muffins to all of the passengers. I got up to go over to the stand, but as I did this our few rows in economy were called to board the plane - bother!
I entered the plane and was directed to my seat in economy, which was all black leather with black leather head protectors on, with the logo TAP imbossed in the leather.
I am looking at my husband and he is looking at me, were both thinking have we boarded the right plane?
Last time we went on holiday we went to Greece - A complete disaster! anyway that is another story, but we flew on AIR 2000 which was a pack everyseat with every cheap tourist, screaming child, people looking for a quick taste of sun....you can guess the picture I am creating here!? can't you???
The TAP Air Portugal plane was a small Airbus, with only about 20 passengers in economy so we could spread out as much as you like. In Buisness class there was about 15 people and they were TAP Air Portugal cabin crew and captains going to the staff meeting in Maderia for a few days.
The TV dropped out of the ceiling above us, and the staff checked we all had our seatbelts on, we are ready for take off.
Once airborn and sitting comfortably the first round of complimentary drinks came out, then seconds, then the very tastey food for an airline.
I believe it was roast pork, with vegetables and salad. A chocolate muffin for dessert, a cheese and biscuit with more drinks, All complimentray of course! I am now comfortably stuffed - oh no more wine - OK then ( Me I am easily persuaded).
The leg room around each seat was more then you would normally get on a charter flight, and for my husband who is 6ft6, not moaning about his legs being cramped is blissful to me and a very good point to other tall travellers.
We are about half way through the flight, the little TV's are switching back 'n' forth showing the progress of the flight and which countries you are flying over, the outside & inside temperature, and lastly the speed we are travelling at. The details this little screens gives you makes flying alot more interesting than before.
After about 3 hours we arrive at Maderia airport which you get of the plane and walk across the tarmac to the entrance doors ready to collect your luggage. The airport was so clean, full of marble, something like you find in the movies.
Allt he TAP Air POrtugal cabin crew are very helpfull in showing you where to go and they thank you for flying with them all the way.
My husband and I have been back in the UK for 8 weeks now and if anyone asks about our honeymoon, both of us say the first thing "the flights where fantastic! we recommend TAP Air Portugal to anyone".
I must just let you know the return flight was just as complimentary as the outward flight, I can not fault them they take care of everything you ask for.

Sounds like they've improved beyond recognition. 10 years ago my husband used to go to portugal regularly on business. He said TAP stood for Take Another Plane. S
