This isn’t a review of the shop, and the general clothing bargain’s to be had inside, but instead that of the cafe, which is in the basement of this particular store.

First let give you some background information as to why I ended eating in the TK Maxx cafe, especially as I wasn’t even shopping in the store! Today is match day in Cardiff, not a rugby match, which is normally frenetic, but a football match which though it’s not as busy as rugby days, it’s still pretty jammed. My father would’ve been quite happy to simply get a pasty and walk the streets, but my mother hadn’t wanted to wander about and the TK Maxx cafe was the closest thing that provided seats and wasn’t packed, and now I know why.

Firstly being in the basement, you feel enclosed and quite claustrophobic, you’re also surrounded by suitcases which makes you feel more hemmed in, as well as a metal barrier sounding the whole of the cafe area. Nice

Willing to put this aside to have something to eat, I went up with my father to order the food, which is mostly sandwiches, jacket potatoes, soups and pastries, most of the sandwiches being between £2 and £4, which is about average. While waiting in the queue I noticed the all of the prices for jacket potatoes were all the same, which I thought odd, as most cafe’s charge less for cheese (or in this case cheese and onion) than other fillings. ‘Cause let’s face it, it doesn’t cost that much to make it! I decided once more to put this aside while I got to the counter to order, after asking for one of these cheese and onion jacket potatoes, I was informed that there was no onion left and that it would just be cheese. I asked if there could be a reduction in price, and when the server checked with his manager, he came back out with what can only be called a smirk on his face as if it was ridiculous to ask and told me that it would be the same price.

I’m sorry but £3.70 for a jacket potato with cheese and onion is ridiculous enough, but the same price when I wasn’t even getting what was advertised? That is just bare-faced cheek.

The full cost for one sandwich, one toasty and the Panini that changed my order to with two lots of teas, came to £11.65. My father and I returned to the table to wait for the delivery of our warm sandwiches, during this time my father wanted to go to the toilet, which is when we discovered that there was only a disabled toilet close to cafe, which is understandable, but the men’s was on the second floor, the ladies was on the first. I know that they have escalators and lifts available, but to get up from the basement there was either stairs or lifts, and my sixty-one year old father looks on lifts as for pregnant women, people with pushchairs and disabilities to use, so he would walk up the stairs and in the time it took him to get to the toilet and back, our food still hadn’t arrived, and as I said at the beginning, the place wasn’t that busy, so what were they doing back there? Then again maybe I don’t want to know.

When our food did arrive, yes it was hot, so hot in fact that it was hard for me to pick up the Panini with it’s hot melted cheese coming close to burning my fingers, and of course they hadn’t provided me with cutlery to stop this from happening, and my father had to go up and ask at the counter, as they hadn’t put any within easy reach, perhaps they think everyone who eats there suffers from kleptomania.

After so much negativity perhaps i should end on a positive note. The vinigrette on the lacklustre salad was ok.

I did not know that TK Maxx had cafes, but it doesn't sound that good so I don't think I will be hunting any out!
