A Tallinn of Two Cities

Advantages: The residue of earlier centuries
Disadvantages: The residue of the Soviet era

...I knew in advance that Tallinn wasn’t going to be the way it looked as we came in to land, or I might have been depressed. The plane’s flightpath brought us in from the east, flying over the dreary sprawl of apartment blocks that disfigures so many cities scarred by a Soviet past. And quite a few without a Soviet past, of course.

I knew that amid the sprawl I would find an attractive historic centre – a World Heritage Site, no less ...
.../> As a short-break destination, Tallinn today has much to recommend it. The charming old centre is compact enough to be explored in a day on foot – though two or three would be better – while the outlying sights are easily reached by cheap, efficient public transport. Notwithstanding the ugly sprawl seen from the air, the city has its pleasant green spaces and a shoreline too. The locals are friendly, welcoming and keen to practise their remarkably ... more

A new song for Europe

Advantages: Picturesque, fascinating, variety of things to see, Depeche Mode bar
Disadvantages: Cruise ship passengers, stag parties

...disappointed not have got to Tallinn before the stag parties but its proximity to Finland where I was holidaying last September coupled with the touristic worth of Estonia's capital city meant I would have been foolish to let a few drunken Brits put me off. As it turned out, the irritations came from another group altogether.... Some geography.... Tallinn is situated on the Baltic Sea a couple of hours across the water from Helsinki. The Russian ...
...amazingly beautiful medieval part of Tallinn that attracts visitors though in recent years the liberal prostitution laws and thriving sex industry as well as the cheap beer have seen the city become a popular destination for groups of young men from all over Europe though there will be plenty of British voices to be heard on any weekend. The Old Town (Vanalinn) forms the heart of the city; Tallinn Bay is just to the north and the newer parts form ...

Well Preserved

Advantages: old, attractive, no annoying street vendors
Disadvantages: aching feet, we were done in a day

...take a day trip to Tallinn in Estonia. This we did yesterday and had a great day out. There were a huge number of museums and galleries that we didn't look at, a huge number of shops we didn't go in and a vast number of traditional Estonian restaurants that we didn't have the space in our stomach to try. This is just a brief description of our trip; there is plenty more in the city that we didn't see. ~~~ Getting There ~~~ There are plenty of boats ...
...The old town centre of Tallinn is definitely the touristy bit. The entire area seemed dedicated to the tourist trade. There are a lot of old buildings and nice bits of architecture, including the remnants of the former town walls, complete with towers in places. It's a very pleasant place to just wander around the town, taking a look in the churches and admiring the buildings. We went up the tower of one of the churches, I think it was called St ...

The Scruffy Shoe Diaries BOOKING AHEAD ADVISABLE

Advantages: Medieval old town
Disadvantages: Irish theme pub

...>> FIND Tallinn is a port on the Baltic sea. Consequently, you can get there quickly, easily and cheaply by boat. The quickest, easiest and cheapest route is from Helsinki, where for the foreign equivalent of a tenner you can take the hour and a half catamaran trip, a mere 53 miles, with a bunch of Finns intent on p*ssing it up on the cheap. (Finnish booze, although probably the least expensive in Scandinavia, is still pricey. Estonian is not). ...
...of the cloistered protection of Tallinn old town and out into the metropolis proper. Here we observed what might be described as "contrast". The old town just opens out onto a congested main street that you'd find in any city pretty much anywhere, with department stores and hotels and office blocks and the like. Beyond that, a few blocks over was more interesting. This is where the residential areas began, and the spectre of Soviet planning was plain. ...

I've died and gone to heaven

Advantages: Cheap, Nice people, Beer Festival
Disadvantages: Starting to get popular, Food not great, rip-off taxis!

I have visited Tallinn in July for the last two years with a friend predominantly to take in the Ollesummer Beer Festival, but there are also many other attractions to this well-preserved town. The Town ======== Tallinn consists of two parts, the old town with its cobbled streets and beautiful architecture and the new 'Soviet Era' town with its masses of concrete and ugly buildings, including a strangely mesmeric TV tower, which is the tallest ...
...the commerce takes place in Tallinn and has various shopping centres and banks available here. The two main bus stations, for local buses and long-distance buses respectively can also be found here. Tallinn is also beside the sea and has its own beach. If the weather is nice (and it was both times we were there) then it seems like the entire population of Tallinn heads to the beach to catch some sunshine. The beach itself is nothing startling and ...

Cruise to Talinn

Advantages: History, Cheap, Trouble-free
Disadvantages: None that we can think of

The first bit is about getting there, and after that it's about Tallin itself, ok? 1st Bit ------- We board the Fantaasia ship, after some initial problems finding the terminal, signs would be helpful. Still we make it in time, and find the cabin, thanks to one of the staff who strangely speaks no Swedish. The cabin is small but we hadn't planned spending much time in here anyway except perhaps to sleep occasionally. We explore the ship, it's ...
...nightclub, blackjack and slot machines, and not much else. The theme of this particular cruise is Caribbean Dream which meant they had hung a few flowers around the place and play latino music on a never ending loop, with some occasional reggae too. No steel bands though, no soca, not even a Bob Marley track the whole time. I wonder if the people behind it had ever been to a Caribbean island, or even done the slightest bit of research. Still we were ...

The Englishman, the Irishman, and some Estonians

Advantages: Good fun, cheap
Disadvantages: Some questionable entertainment and dodgy passengers

In this opinion I'm not going to bore you too much with a long history of the company, the measurements of the ship, or describe it's safety features in detail. It's much more fun simply to describe the overall experience of a short time spent on a Tallink Ferry. I will first however give you a brief run down of what I'm talking about here though. Tallink are a ferry company who have since the late 1980's operated routes between Stockholm (Sweden) and Tallinn (Estonia), and Kappelskär and Paldiski, also in Sweden and Estonia. Although I have no experience, they also offer day trips between Helsinki and Tallinn. They have 8 ships, crew of over 2000, and carry 2.7million passengers each year. We took the MS Fantaasia (not a mis-spelling), which has a 1700 passenger capacity, also capable of taking over 500 cars. Prices are reasonable ...

Sounds like something Swedish Chef would say

Advantages: Cheap, good short break, tax free shopping, good food
Disadvantages: Not much time to look at destination

communication problems. USEFUL THINGS ------------- You'll need a passport to travel. Check in is from 2 hours prior to departure, and boarding is generally half hour before the ship sails. Mariehamn in Åland is 1 hour ahead of Swedish time. As with all good companies, credit cards are accepted on board the ship. In addition to the Åland cruise, Birka also offers summertime sailings such as a 2-day or weekend cruise to Tallinn in Estonia, Gdynia in Poland or Riga in Latvia. http://www.birka.se/ is the site with all the information and photographs. An English version is also available, but doesn't have all the information that the Swedish version has. OUR TRIP -------- I went with LuckyCow, and her sister and boyfriend back at the end of April 2002. We had a cheap cabin each, which was just about big enough for all 4 of us to ...

A load of old bull?

Advantages: An alternative view of Estonia, interesting sights, enough to fill a day
Disadvantages: Not enough for some people to do

It's not often that I visit somewhere I haven't previously heard of but I have to admit that before I went to Estonia earlier this year the only town I could say I knew with any certainty was the capital Tallinn. The Lonely Planet guide to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania describes Rakvere as "set with a magnificent castle - and very large bull sculpture". That's good enough for me. Those were not the only factors in choosing to visit Rakvere. I was looking for a simple bus ride from the capital, Tallinn, and, with it raining sporadically, somewhere with something to do indoors. There is a regular bus service between Tallinn and Rakvere with the journey taking just under two hours; its not an especially scenic journey, unless miles and miles of monotonous forest floats your boat. I was pleased to read that this part of Estonia is not ...
