Memories of Sicily
The island of Sicily lies off the south coast of Italy in the Mediterranean sea.
It is famous for its vast coastline, historic landmarks and for homing the biggest volcano in Europe. This was my third visit to Sicily and we were staying in the small coastal town of Taormina.
I sat, my head buried in my English book, writing a piece of coursework on 'An Inspector Calls'. I gazed up and cast my eyes over the rails that circled my balcony. I dropped my pen on the table. It slowly rolled off and cluttered through a small gap in the floor of the balcony. The view I was confronted with was staggering. My eyes weaved through the tangled city of chimneys. Their weathered terracotta tops balancing precariously on the tips of the hand made towers. Chimneys tangled up with archways of stone and exotic roof top gardens. Creating a golden pathway that if followed would lead up and over the abundant hills of emerald with only a few anomalous cream villas, their outstanding fire red roofs distorting in shimmers of heat.
The only thing from there on was the centre piece of the surging hills. Mount Etna. The biggest and most spectacular volcano in Europe. Also known, by Sicilians, as Muncibeddhu or simply iddhu meaning him of the mountain. It was a clear day. On most normal days in Sicily there is a cloak of cloud wrapped around the mountain, gripping to its black waist. But today was different. The only clouds that lay in the sky were the creation of the billows of waste excoriated from the main crater embedded in Etna. As there were no clouds you could see the secretive peak of the sleeping volcano. Its snow capped zenith staring right back at you. I could feel the gentle touch of the breeze on my cheek. The zephyr that carried the icy chill from the frosted crown placed on Etnas head. It sailed past my face and in through the open doorway of my room. The silk white curtains lifting and wrapping their ghostly arms around me. I held them there for a moment, their soft material touching my face. I eventually let them fall from my hands and drift back into the room. They settled back into place still waving in the breeze. The room they fell back into was ostentatious. It had the typical Italian slate floor, polished clean and perfect. I slid my bare foot in through the doorway and let it settle onto the cold floor. It was soothing. Cooling the heat from my body that had been endorsed from the fine day outside. I now stood in the doorway, gazing towards the sea. The beauty of the blue green Mediterranean sea that brushed against a small island reaching out towards the horizon.
I turned and looked over my shoulder. I could see the narrow street running down below my balcony. There stood a man staring straight back into my eyes. A mischievous grin stretched across his face. He had something in his hand. He had picked up my pen.
"Buon giorno" He exclaimed.
"Buon giorno" I replied in the best sounding Italian I could.
Immediately he had realized I wasn't Italian. He simply pointed at my pen and shouted "Presa". In one motion he swung his arm forward and released the pen.
I leant out over the balcony and caught it.
When I looked back down to thank him, he was gone.
I could hear the noise of the busy streets slowly start to build up. The sound of the local citizens buying traditional goods from the market on the main street. The cheerful aria's of the stereotypical moped passing by. The sound of friends, culture and peace.
The previous night there had been a small group of musicians playing outside a café right below me. They had played typical Italian music and also classics such as the theme from 'The Godfather'. I had sat out on the balcony that evening and listened. There had been many people dancing and everyone was joyful. Essentially, for me, Sicily.

I highly recommend a holiday to, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful and fantastic places in the world.
Advantages: Beautiful place Disadvantages: Uphill climbs in some places.
...a variety of people in Taormina, not only italian, but spanish, german, english and americans. The americans love Sicily as they get to look at Mount Etna. The excursion to Mount Etna worked out at about 60 euros per person which in my opinion was extremely expensive. This only paid for a bus to the bottom of the Mountain, then you have to pay extra to go upto the top. There is other beaches on the island which are really soft but to get to everything ... ...cheap which cost about 1 euro single to almost anywhere nearby. Renting a car in my opinion is not recommended as the roads are way to steep, bendy and dangerous. Eating out is expensive in Sicily and would cost about 25 euros each for an evening meal. A bottle of wine is about 10 euros and bottles of water is about 2.50. It is a beautiful resort but one of those places which you go once in a lifetime for the beauty of it, or go every year if you ...

Advantages: Beautiful Culture and Scenery Disadvantages: Mad Drivers in traffic choked streets!
Taormina - Undeniably special, a very pretty hillside town and one of our favourite Sicilian holiday locations. Although expensive to stay here it is well worth coming here. Taormina is high on Monte Tauro so you have to travel downwards to the two bays below if you wish to visit the beach, Giardini-Naxos. We stayed in Villa Belevdere, via Bagnoli Croce, situated in the cliff, views absolutley stunning of the Bay of Naxos. are only a few minutes stroll away. Very busy place during June and September, very crowded with tourists in the main street Corso Umberto, but what an atmosphere! Music everywhere, and street entertainers! Absolutely fantastic. You walk alot here, as it is the best way of getting about, but there are quite reasonable taxis, and buses to get around, and the cable car service between Taormina ...

Advantages: historicaly interesting, prety town, great views Disadvantages: long train journet from Palermo
Taormina is a very pretty town on the Eastern coast of Sicily. We took a very slow train journey from Palermo along the North coast, which took the best part of a day, having to change and wait in Messina. When you get to Taormina station you will find yourself at the bottom of the hill so you would need to hire a taxi or wait for a local bus to take you up to the town. The buses didn't seem too predictable but then we were arriving on a Sunday. ... ...more reliable. However, when you get up into the town you will realise that the journey is well worth it. Taormina is a very pretty historic town. Visit the amphitheatre for fantastic views of Mount Etna. A walk up a steep path behind the town affords more spectacular vies of Etna and the coast
The town can basically be navigated from the main drag of shops and restaurants. Typically for Italy there is a vast range of prices. This can also be quite ...

stairwells recording the history of theatre. On one side, is a painting recreating the theater of antiquity in Taormina, Sicily and ?Der Thespiskarren? a painting depicting Thespis the first performer of a Greek Tragedy and on the other is a depiction of the London Globe Theatre and the final scene from Shakespeare?s "Romeo and Juliet." In the background, the painter immortalized himself and his two colleagues. Emperor Franz Joseph was so delighted with the paintings in the gala stairwells that he bestowed the Golden Cross of Merit on the members of the artists? group.
The foyer at the top of the stairwells is 200 feet in length and curves following the exterior contours of the main section. It is illuminated by arched windows and stately chandaleirs. Portraits of famous actors and actresses line the walls.
The central auditorium is massive ...

Advantages: Hot, Beautiful Scenery, great ice-cream Disadvantages: Hot, More expensive than other places in the Med but not as pricey as people think
Just back from Taormina on the North East coast of Sicily. Been to Italy before (Sorrento & Lake Garda) do thought we would give Sicily a try. Lovely place very similar to Sorrento in feel. Stayed in a hotel called Ariston, lovely setting but not up to much food-wise (very repetative menu). Travelled with a company called Belle-Air, Malta specialist but also do travel to Sicily - would NEVER travel with them again! - All relaxation of the holiday wiped out by the arrangements for our journey to the airport (arrived well passed last check in time and only about 40 minutes before our flight was due to leave).
Etna is well worth a visit although make sure you have enough cash for the cable car to the top (35000 Lira per person).
Alacantra Gorge is spectacular (our trip to Etna stopped here first) - but take a towel so you can wade ...
Advantages: Climate, People and History Disadvantages: Not many sandy beeches
Malta is not the best place in the Mediterranean for beeches but makes up for it by having very friendly people, glourious all year sunshine and a rich history. Some good places to visit are Valleta The Capital)with it's narrow streets shops and cafes,Mdina (The old Capital)with it's splendid views and Malta's sister island of Gozo.
I would also recommend one of the round the island cruises that call in at the blue lagoon on Comino (Malta's third island)and a cruise of the Grand Harbour.
Day trips to Sicily are also possible, visiting Mount Etna and Taormina. ...
