Advantages: Well worth the effort of getting there - a real Jewel! Disadvantages: pricey for those on a tight budget

I cannot extol Taormina enough and this is a second review from me about it. I have travelled to Sicily four times for holidays, each time taking a "package deal" as it is the only way to get there without spending a complete fortune for the sake of your independence! Taormina is not really for the disabled person, as it is an ancient town full of many deep stone steps which terrace the hill side on which it stands, but depending on your needs as a disabled person, and if you have lots of helpers on holiday with you, you could still find this a wonderful experience. As the hotels are a bit pricey on the whole, unless you decide to go out of season of course, then the prices are almost halved! Value for money is different here. There are a few bargains in Taormina, alot of restaurants offer a limited choice which is the cheaper option (10 to 15 euros a head) but wine is always extra. I have not experienced bed and breakfast arrangements here as we stayed in self catering the first time and Villa Belvedere on the last occasion. I know there is a camp site called Meretna from mid March- Oct and is apparently a very sunny place to camp with little shade. One of our best bus rides was to CASTELMOLA about 5km up above Taormina, if you walk it's about an hour, but friends of ours took the bus up and walked down picking wild figs on the way! Visit to the Bar Turrisi is essential here - but not for the prudish!!! I'll say no more on that subject!! I highly recommend the local nougat made with pistachios - which is absolutley devine! Travel from the Airport (Catania) unless you get diverted is about 1 hour in a car and 45 mins on the Train and about 45min-1 hr on the bus.
Advantages: Hot, Beautiful Scenery, great ice-cream Disadvantages: Hot, More expensive than other places in the Med but not as pricey as people think
Just back from Taormina on the North East coast of Sicily. Been to Italy before (Sorrento & Lake Garda) do thought we would give Sicily a try. Lovely place very similar to Sorrento in feel. Stayed in a hotel called Ariston, lovely setting but not up to much food-wise (very repetative menu). Travelled with a company called Belle-Air, Malta specialist but also do travel to Sicily - would NEVER travel with them again! - All relaxation of the holiday ... ...airport (arrived well passed last check in time and only about 40 minutes before our flight was due to leave).
Etna is well worth a visit although make sure you have enough cash for the cable car to the top (35000 Lira per person).
Alacantra Gorge is spectacular (our trip to Etna stopped here first) - but take a towel so you can wade down the river!
Greek Theatre in Taormina has a spectacular view on Etna and well worth a visit. The Gardens in ...
