My name is Martin Scholes. I like writing reviews on Ciao. I am married, we have a cockatiel and a cat. And a growing African Grey. Who orders the cat around!

The Tap And Spile public house, is on Gas Street, Birmingham. In fact, the pub can be entered on two levsl, from Gas Street (which is just off Broad Street) and on a lower level, from the canalside tow path.
Although both sections of the pub are attractive (in a rather nice traditional pub sort of a way) I tend to prefer the lower level.
There is a wide range of beers available, and about £2.00 a pint or so, the London Pride (which is kept very, very well indeed) is my drink of choice at The Tap and Spile.
There is also a good selection of other high quality ales available including Adnams Broadside and Old Speckled Hen, along with several others. Cider (real cider) has also been known to be sold there, too!
There is also a wide range of country wines, including Parsnip wine and Mead, and these are all well worth a taste, though a word of caution, they should be treated with a great deal of respect.
Home cooked food is also available during the daytime, and is all of a reasonable price. Two can certainly eat for around £10 to £15 and the menu ranges from burgers to fish and chips and other meals normally found in pubs. It is not a Gastro Pub, thank the good Lord! For Gastro pubs can’t seem to make up their mind if they are a snooty restaurant or a pub, and often fail to be either, much to the misery of patrons and some staff. But you will not find any snootiness about The Tap and Spile. It is a good, honest Birmingham pub!
The clientele is very mixed. Tourists who wander past the lower level on the canalside tpwpath and who find the ambience of the pub inviting, businessmen and women who want to chat over drinks in a pub where they will not be spotted by rivals, often to be seen in the more regular haunts of colleagues or rivals.
The pub is also much loved by Bohemians and students. And also by regulars who live in nearby flats and houses who really do struggle to find a real, old-fashioned Birmingham pub in the centre of their city, anymore.
You can find the Tap and Spile at Gas Street, Birmingham, B1 2JT. Or call The Tap and Spile on 0121 632 5602.

Called in there last time I went to Birmingham. I too prefer the lower level at the side of the canal. we had to sit outside as the place was packed solid. good review. joan x

Nice review. But, oh, gosh!!! All the Birmingham pubs seem to have changed their names since I was there in 1973-76! What has become of The Pot of Beer? All is lost. All those wasted hours in "The Pot". Diane.

Advantages: Historic market town, oozing with charm, lots of shops for the shoppers and history for the historians Disadvantages: None that I can think of
