In June 2009 I was touring Scotland with my parents (in their 50's) and wanted somewhere to stay near Loch Lomond. After many hours of searching the internet I came across Tarbet House.
The house Tarbet House is set high above the village of Tarbet on 7 acreas of land. It has spectacular views of Loch Lomond on the southern side and Ben Lomond on the western side. The gardens are stunning and when the weather permits there is an area to sit out in the gardens looking towards the loch. Although the only wildlife we saw were birds and red squirels (which are a rare sight), we were told that they sometimes have visitors in the form of deers!
Hospitality Paula and George couldn't be any more welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much hassle for them. When we first arrived Paula
asked if she could book us anywhere to eat and it was after 5pm. She had a huge selection of menus for restaurants/pubs in the surrounding areas. Her knowledge of the area and places to eat were a definate bonus. Paula & George also had plenty of suggestions of attractions which we could visit come rain or shine.
Bedrooms The house has three guest suites: The Macgregor, The Buchanan and The Macfarlane Suite. All rooms are en suite with a bath and seperate walk in shower. A hospitality tray wth tea & coffee making facilities, TV, DVD, Clock / Radio, Iron & Ironing Board Station were all available.
* The Macgregor - whilst I did not see this room I believe that it was a double bedroom with a seperate sitting room. The suite has views facing south over Loch Lomond.
* The Buchanan - I stayed in this room myself. This suite was double bedroom with King Size Bed. There was also a sitting area which has south facing loch views.
This suite has stunning views of both Loch Lomond and Ben Lomond from both windows.
* The Macfarlane - My parents both stayed in this room. Again it was a double bedroom. It had a fantastic king-size four poster bed. This room had a seperate sitting room which led out onto a balcony.
I can only speak for the two rooms that we stayed in but they were spotless and we tidied every day. I suppose the only tiny issue was the TV and its reception. You could still watch the TV but the picture wasn't fantastic....but to be honest if you are in the middle of nowhere with beautiful scenery who needs television??? Even if reception wasn't fab each room had a DVD player and Paula & George had a huge variety of DVDs that you cold borrow at any time for free.
Breakfast Breakfast was served in the dining room with a view towards Loch Lomond. The breakfasts were to die for! They are served between 08:00 and 09:00 and done in half hour slots in order for Paula & George to pay attention to each and everyone of their guests (e.g. 8:00, 8;30, 9:00). Although this was the case we were never rushed into finishing breakfast if the other guests came down for breakfast. Choice of food/drink included:
cereals
fresh fruit
yoghurts
cooked breakfast which consisted of bacon, egg (fried, scrambled, boiled or poached), sausage, mushrooms, tomatos, hash browns and black pudding
drinks - fresh orange juice, milk, tea, coffee
porridge (if requested the previous evening as its home made)
Tariff All rooms are priced at £99 a night based on two persons sharing. As I was staying in the room on my own Paula reduced the price to £90 which was reasonable.
Other A wide variety of menus were always available for you to see where you might like to eat out. One of the restuarants we wanted to try out required a reservation. Paula booked the table for us and made sure we got the best seats in the house!
I honestly could not fault Tarbet House. It was spotless, modern and you were made welcome. One fault that some people may find is that children and pets aren't catered for but that wasn't a problem for me. Also, it is a bed and breakfast so dinner isn't availble but that didn't matter because it was nice to go out and try out different restuarants/foods. I most certaintly stay they again if I was in the area. The House if ver popular though so make sure you book well in advance.
