You will find Tates in the centre of Boston on New Street just off the main market place.
The building itself is triangular, and they serve take away as well as eating in. Whilst you are sitting and eating you will see that the take out fryers are never empty and it is just a never ending queue for the fish and chips. What better testament to our Great British meal?

The inside of the building is like going back in time with Formica topped tables covered with plastic table cloths and spindle back chairs, which are still very comfy. They have an upstairs room and the place itself amazingly can seat 150.
I use to take a coach of tenants from the Sheltered Housing Scheme that I worked at, for a trip out and we would book a private function there for tea, we were always made welcome, and the food always just cooked for us. The question on our journey home was, "When are can we book to going again?" praise itself.
The menu is quiet varied, with wonderful fried cod, (large cod or haddock is two pieces) haddock, plaice, skate or lemon sole. They do also steamed fish for those that are not able to eat fried fish, and whole tail scampi. Chips are crinkle cut and golden brown crisp and just delicious. Chicken is on the menu, along with sausages and cod bites.
With the onset of healthy diets they also have salads, a great vegetarian menu a choice of specials, ocean pie salmon and broccoli mornay plus others. None of this was available in the 50's and 60's when I was growing up.
David has also ventured out to add pizza and burger to the menu.
You can have peas (mushy and green) beans, curry sauce or gravy, bread and butter and not to forget the mug of tea, proper tea in a proper small mug.
Desserts are available served with either ice cream or custard, the blackberry and apple pie is always welcome.
You can book a private function like I use to, they also cater for children's parties, and serve children's portions Senior Citizen Days are Monday and Tuesday.
I can think of nothing better than visiting Boston have a walk around the market and the Boston Stump, the largest parish church in the country. Did you know that the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from Bosotn? Visit the memorial, and then have fish and chips at Tates.
