It seemed like a dream.
My taxi pulled up to the TAVERN. The doorman opened my door and said, "Welcome to the Tavern". I stepped out and saw beautiful horses hitched to carriages in a row. They looked like something out of a fairy tale.
I entered the Tavern's peaceful, dimly lit foyer. What a contrast to the hustle and bustle of NYC. The maitre de asked if I would like the indoor dining room or the outdoor garden. I chose the garden.
As I admired a beautiful flower bed, staff brought menus, water, rolls and butter in synchronized timing. I had the waiter choose a wine. Within minutes, he returned with a sizeable goblet. He waited for my opinion. It was excellent.
I ordered a steak, exactly medium rare, without a drop of blood or an ounce of gristle. My salad was so crisp and fresh it could have been grown on the premises. My steak was EXACTLY as I ordered. It melted in my mouth and tasted delicious beyond words.
I accidentally dropped my fork on the floor. One man dodged to pick it up and another delivered a replacement. They eased my embarrassment with jokes.
I was asked, exactly the right amount of times at exactly the right moments, if everything was all right and if I'd like anything else.
I ordered dessert. Within minutes, a Baked Alaska was set aflame at my table. Engulfed in its glow and candlelight I thought---at this particular moment in my life everything is right. For me, that feeling is part of the lure of The Tavern.
As I floated out of The Tavern, the staff took the time to thank me.
Often times we can tell others about a dream, but they can never experience it. In this case, I am happy to say everyone can. In reality, go to the edge of Central Park in NYC. In dreamland, go to the edge of Cloud Nine in Utopia. Go ahead! Treat yourself! Be King or Queen for the evening!
I have heard lots of clamor about the price of The Tavern. I usually plan on about $100, give or take, for 2 people. In my E-PINION it is worth every penny and then some. I strongly recommend RESERVATIONS. To all the tourists out there---don't forget your camera. The TAVERN is a beautiful sight to behold
Advantages: All you can think of Disadvantages: May be a bit overwhelming
.
Sak's 5th Avenue, Macy's, Bloomingdales etc etc. - all the major shops you've heard of in the films and many you haven't. They're worth paying a visit. Think Harrods meets Selfriges meets a much bigger building.
Broadway - Have to take a walk down broadway and look at the lights, sounds and theatres.
Central Park - it's huge, and you're quite likely to spot a celebrity jogging, walking their dog or just walking. Sting's New York digs are just off Central Park in a nice building about 1/3 of the way up on the west side. Don't forget to have a look at the Zoo and the Ice rink.
Tavern on the Green - a nice restaurant in Central park that serves good food in a congenial atmosphere.
Horse and carriages - go to the south east side of Central Park and you'll see loads of carriages. They aren't particularly cheap, but they do give you ...
Advantages: A wonderful place with so much to see and do Disadvantages: You need to spend at least a day to see it all
the Hans Christian Andersen and Alice in Wonderland sculptures and the Chess and Checkers house. Moses also renovated the Tavern on the Green and the Central Park Children's Zoo during this period.
Moses was to retire in 1960. This left the park without a defender. It also was the start of a 20 year decline in the park. The 1960's saw a park that was ravished by vandalism, concerts and peace rallies. The City council did little to maintain the park and it soon became a lawless place with broken fixtures, graffiti and general neglect of the plant life in the park. It was no longer a place to go if you wanted to snatch a little bit of peacefulness. It was a lawless place. It was not until the late 70's when the action groups to save the park were finally acknowledged that something was done to once again save the park from becoming a vandalized ...
Advantages: It has so many wonderful sites and sounds. Disadvantages: Traffic
have eaten their food, it's excellent and I like the dress up atmosphere of the place.
Another fine dining experience can be had at Tavern on the Green. This restaurant is in Central Park. This is a prime area of the city. This [lace has an outdoor patio areas that I suggest you try in the spring and summer. There are so many things to do and see in this park. During the summer is the Shakespear on the Green shows. There is a small zoo, carousel, lakes with row boats to rent and godolier rides. I have grown up with that zoo. y parents used to take me there. It has changed over the years in that lions and tigers and monkeys are not there anymore. There are bears. We enjoy watching them swimming in there pond. That's where you'll find them in the summer months. This is where the tribute to John Lenon's Strawberry Field is found and so so ...
