Tbilisi - my dream come true

Advantages: Beautiful city, sulphur baths, dine in a shed, the market, the people
Disadvantages: Beggars can be overwhelming, poverty, bizarre alphabet

...Seeing a film set in Tbilisi called “Since Otar Left” only strengthened my desire to visit the city. I finally realized my wish to go there last year.

Tbilisi is situated in the heart of Georgia; it’s pretty, it’s old and there’s a lot of history but it’s not a tourist destination. If you go to Tbilisi you’ll encounter lots of non-Georgians but few of them will be tourists; it’s much more likely that they will be the staff of international ...
...has the effect of making Tbilisi a city of extremes. One minute you can be considering splashing out on sushi in a hip restaurant, the next you are fighting off a family of beautiful but waif-like children.

Tbilisi is vast; it has a population of almost two million but it probably seems bigger because of its geography. It is built along the steep banks of the Mtkvari River so it tends to grow lengthways. It has three bus stations – ... more

Welcome to FTC's Backyard UPDATE

Advantages: Tbilisi is a meeting point of the orient and occident. It provides a journey through time (antiquity, middle ages, Soviet rule, modern Georgia).
Disadvantages: Parts of the city have decayed under Soviet rule. Public utilities (electricity, water, heating) are in terrible condition.

...lacking detail. ___________________________________________________ Tbilisi is different. Different from everything you have seen before. It is neither a typical ex-Soviet capital, nor a centre of the orient, nor a standard example for the Christian Orthodox world, although it has elements of all of them. It's the contradictions and ambiguities which, in my view, make Tbilisi so special. The capital of the former Soviet republic of Georgia, now ...
...of Jerusalem ___________________________________________________ Old Tbilisi is a unique mix of ancient cultures and religions which is hard to find anywhere else in the world. An important station on the ancient Silkroad, Old Tbilisi includes Arab, Turkish, Jewish, Armenian, Greek and old Georgian quarters on both sides of the Kura River. Only Jerusalem can match this diversity of Christian, Jewish and Muslim religions and cultures, but Old Tbilisi ...

Review of Marriott Hotel, Tbilisi

Flying over the Caucasus

Advantages: Quick, great views, better than driving
Disadvantages: Little in flight service, little space on board

The Caucasus republics comprise Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, nestling in the Caucasus mountains. Although close together, not far apart, travelling between them has always been time consuming. A drive from Tbilisi, Georgia, to Yerevan, Armenia, takes around five hours assuming good weather through the mountains; the train takes twice as long. From Baku, Azerbaijan to Tbilisi the drive is seven hours, or an overnight train. There is no way to get between Tbilisi and Yerevan as the border has been closed for ten years owing to the conflict over Nagorno Karabakh. So getting between the Caucasus republics is a royal pain in the bum. There used to be a twice weekly service between Yerevan and Tbilisi but that has not operated for years. There is a thrice weekly flight between Baku and Tbilisi flown by Azerbaijan Airlines operated by ...

Georgian wings on my mind

Advantages: Western aircraft, fairly comfortable, clean
Disadvantages: Unfriendly service, poor food

I've posted this under "Georgian Airlines" though in fact that airline was replaced by AirZena Georgian Airlines a couple of years ago. AirZena, the new national airline of Georgia (the country, not the state!) was formed in 1999 when two small private airlines, Air Georgia and Air Zena, were merged. They are based in Tbilisi, Georgia and operate a fleet of two Boeing 737s leased from Germany. They also have their predecessors' aircraft, a handful of Tupolevs and an Ilyushin but there are rarely used nowadays. In spring 2003, two of the three European airlines flying to Tbilisi suspended their flights, as their licences were either refused, or severely restricted. This was allegedly because they were being forced to sign agreements with AirZena that they did not want, so they refused. The result has been that AirZena now have ...
