Fondly called La Fenice - evoking the myth of the Phoenix bird that periodically burns ... more
itself in order to rise again from the ashes as a symbol of eternal renewal - the Venetian theatre has burned to the ground twice since it opened in 1792. Following the first fire, during the night of 12/13 December 1836 it was rebuilt according to the original plans by Tommaso and Giambattista Meduna on a new site, the Campo San Fantin, where it has now been rebuilt following the second fire on the night of 29/30 January 1996, which reduced the theatre to its bare foundations. When the legendary Phoenix finally rose from the ashes again in 2003, its rebirth was celebrated with a series of concerts. Riccardo Muti, musical director of Italy's other world-famous opera house - La Scala, conducted the official inaugural gala concert on December 14th. In the presence of the Italian President, Carlo Ciampi, Muti conducted La Fenice's choir and orchestra together with some of the best Italian singers in an unusual but truly Venetian programme.

Advantages: location location Disadvantages: the staff
the hotel is famous for the artists and authors who have stayed there. The hotel is located just five minutes walk from St. Mark's Square. so a brilliant location only problem is finding it the first time as the directions to the hotel given by the hotel seem very complicated and not easy to follow. It is only 15 minutes from Rialto bridge and even closer to Acadamier so a perfect location. It is located in a quiet thoroughfare so no street noise . It is right by the famous opera house that was burnt down and has now been rebuilt in all its glory although to go for a tour is by special arrangement only. The hotel ambience was very much in keeping with Venice and has a quantness about it there is a little garden you can have your breakfast in and drinks in the evening although it is quite nice it is not beautiful.. The bedrooms were ...
Advantages: Excellent well scripted story Disadvantages: Slow investigation
Background:
I have reviewed several novels written by Donna Leon in the past few months. My manager introduced me to her work and this review is as a result of a gift from her of this book. I'm sure there should be a saying 'beware bosses bringing gifts'! I thought I should share my thoughts on this and wait to see what my manager now expects from me.
About the Author:
Contrary to my original thoughts Donna Leon is an American of Irish/Spanish descent. She has however lived in Italy for over 20 years and this is where all her books are set specifically in Venice. All her books feature the likable Commissario Guildo Brunetti as the investigating officer.
About the book:
This is Donna Leon's first of many highly acclaimed novels. The book begins with the death of the World famous German Conductor Maestro Helmut Wellauer. Who ...
Advantages: Great food, reasonable fixed price menu Disadvantages: None
On our recent trip to the Loire Valley Mr Tart and myself arrived in Tours quite late on our first night. We drove down to Tours from Paris. We were going to stop for something to eat on the way but in the end decided to make our way straight to Tours and get settled in the hotel and then find something close by. A couple of minutes from our hotel we came across this place and were really glad that we did.
LOCATION:
La Chope is located at 25 Avenue Grammont. Our hotel was on the same road so we just came across it. It is about a ten minute walk from Tours? old town. The restaurant doesn?t stand out and the sign is not particularly bright so make sure you look out for it.
THE EXPERIENCE:
La Chope (which apparently translates as the tankard) is actually a fish restaurant. I?m not really a fish person (ok, that ...
