...Montevideo is the capital city of Uruguay and gives hospitality to more or less the 50% of the inhabitants of the whole Uruguay. Montevideo is a modern city that includes also the historic zone of the old city. All around the city there are many beaches with their white sands. The old city, called "CIUDAD VIEJA", is scattered with buildings dated 18th century and includes also the market called "MERCADO DEL PUERTO". "AVENIDA 18 DE JULIO" (18 July Avenue) is the right place to find shops, museums, theatres and art galleries. In 1799 the Royal Crown of Spain ordered the construction of a lighthouse able to illuminate the waters of Rio della Plata and to guide the sailors that plough through this river. ...of the area is "Ruta Panorámica" (scenic route), a road that pass through "Sierra de la Ballena" (Range of Whale, a mountain system located between Montevideo and the Atlantic ocean) and bring you from the Montevideo plain to the beaches of Punta del Este through different views. On the highest point of Sierra de la Ballena, 2491 meters above seal level, is located the lighthouse "Juan Diaz de Solis" and from this point you have a breathtaking view from the rock coast to the "Maldonado" bay, from the "Solanas" beach to the "Sierra de las Animas" with the "Pan de Azúcar" peak. At kilometre 10 of the Ruta Panoramica we can visit the "Grutas de la Ballena" (Caves of Whale) with their rocky formations of different shapes as a result of the corroding action of the water of the stream that cross the caves. But in this large country there are hundreds of towns, villages and hamlets full of fascination and history; and I wish to take you around the country to discover its beauties that I have visited during the last 40 years. 200 kilometers west of Minneapolis and closed to the border between Minnesota and South Dakota where the Chippewa river feeds the Minnesota river I found Montevideo, a town of about seven thousand inhabitants.
