I had the pleasure of staying in Tel Aviv for 6 months back in 93 whilst backpacking around Europe. It was fantastic. Whilst the accommodation was nothing special, sharing a dorm room in the Gordon Hostel near the Ramada Hotel, it more than made up for the cockroaches by the stunning views of the med in the mornings. It was right above a bar which didnt kick off until well into the evening so fridays were a lively event. good thing for me too as I worked as a night receptionist in the hostel. it kept me awake although "Rhythym is a Dancer" did get boring after a while.
Dizengoff was fabulous. Full of resteraunts and shops and a great cinema complex. You could eat virtually anything you wanted. Me, I stuck with my beloved Schwarmas.
Further down Dizengoff was my favourite place in tel aviv. nothing historic but the M.A.S.H bar!!! like coming home. Sheperds pie on the menu, dart board in the corner and some wicked kamikaze drinks!!!
Tel Aviv is a great city. it may not have the history of Jerusalem but tries with Yafo. It is lively bustling and a great place to visit.
One day i will go back, but until then I will remember with fondness my 6 months there. For the great time I had and the wonderful people I met.

I'm giving you a H because I feel you've managed to give a flavour of the place. It's a shame your visit was so long ago, because information on prices, travel, etc, would really help this op along.

Advantages: cheap - but I would rather pay a bit more and avoid all the hassle Disadvantages: contrasting communication, no customer service, bad at handling problems
