Spiros... A Stunning Little Greek In Naxos

Advantages: Close to The Beach
Disadvantages: The Rooms in the Original Building are Quite Dated

The Choice... My passion for browsing holiday brochures on cold dismal nights continued, the hubby fancied the Cyclades- a group of Greek Islands scattered across the Aegean sea of Greece - for a change from our usual choices of Crete, and Kos etc.- and as ever it was left to me to choose the appropriate dwelling for our two weeks.away. I decided on Naxos, only accessible by ferry via a chartered flight to Mykonos (if partaking in a package), the largest Island in the Cyclades.. The week before Christmas of 2004 I booked and paid a small deposit of £90 to Kosmar - a Greek holiday specialist in the UK - the balance of £600 was due the following June - plenty of time to save. The hubby wanted to book flights and accommodation separately but I like the security of a package holiday! The Outbound Journey We leave Brum ...

Temple Church: A Curious Congregation of Knights and Lawyers

Advantages: Excellent original features. Beautiful interior restoration.
Disadvantages: Variable opening hours

INTRODUCTION Ever since reading Sir Walter Scott?s ?Ivanhoe? as a pre-teen, I have been fascinated by knights, especially the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, or the Knights Templar as they are more colloquially known. Their white mantle with the blood red cross emblazoned on it inspired childhood daydreams of glorious battles, war horses and many a damsel saved from distress. Of course, in those days, I didn?t really know much about their past. That, and the fascination that arose from it, was down to a Medieval History course at university taught by a very passionate professor, who opened my eyes to the rich and chequered history of one of the most important and amazing military organisations the world has ever known. Then Dan Brown came along and popularised the Grail legend in ?The Da Vinci Code ...

The great temple of Kom Ombo

Advantages: Right on the Banks of the Nile River
Disadvantages: None

Temple of Kom Ombo. The second temple on our tour was at Kom Ombo previously known in ancient times as Nubt or city of gold. It was also known as Thebaid. It is situated on the East bank of the River Nile on a small close to the river. It looks quite stunning and it is only a two minute walk from standing hill where the boats dock on the quayside moorings. Kom Ombo was a small garrison town which was not really suitable for a large settlement due to its position on the Nile being slightly raised and the ground was infertile due to its rocky domain. However it was an important The temple was built from stone from local quarries and hauled by men to the site. There are two entrances at the front of the temple after which there is a long corridor that goes through the centre of the temple. It looks a little like a Pantheon with 15 ...
