Tenement House (Glasgow)

... Number 145 Buccleuch Street is the Tenement House and is a fascinating slice of social history. This building on an ordinary Glaswegian street is like walking in time. The Tenement House dates back to 1892 and from 1911 to her death in the 1960s was the home of Miss Agnes Toward, a spinster ... Read review

Gan hame sweet hame tae the Tenement Hoose

Advantages: a step back in time, beautifully preserved
Disadvantages: difficult for disanbled, limited opening times

...but the better class of tenement still survive, elegantly lining the streets of Glasgow with their wonderful red sandstone facades. The tenement is such a symbol of Glasgow's past the national Trust for Scotland owns such a house in Garnethill very close to the Sauchiehall Street area of the the city centre.

The Tenement House is a property I have always meant to visit on my numerous trips to Glasgow, due to my love and expertise of Scottish Social History but until this visit I have never got round to doing so . I'm glad I visited this time as its great wee gem and a good way to pass an hour when in the glorious city of Glasgow.

Arriving at the door of the tenement block I climbed up into the stair well or the close as it ... more

Absolutely lovely

Advantages: Victorian tenement flat, fabulous, lovely
Disadvantages: --

...was our visit to The Tenement House in Glasgow. Although this special museum is just a tiny tenement flat with two rooms, kitchen and bathroom, we actually spent more than one hour there. It is absolutely lovely. What you will find on the first floor is a typical Victorian tenement flat of 1892, in its original state as it was used in the first half of the 20th century. It was the home of Miss Agnes Toward , an ordinary Glasgow shorthand typist, ...
...reception and an exhibition about tenement life in general, as well as some interpretive and educational facilities, Anna Davidson, an actress who purchased this flat in 1975 has carefully preserved the atmosphere of this place before she sold it to the NTS (National Trust for Scotland) seven years later. The Trust has then restored the flat and opened it to the public. The Tenement House is open from 1 March to 31 October, daily from 2 to 5 pm ...

Glasgow, a city near the Scottish countryside

Advantages: Lots to do, near magnificent countryside
Disadvantages: It rains sometimes

Although I am not too keen on cities, Glasgow is an exception because its friendly, has an wealth of history and plenty of interesting things going on all the time. Glasgwegians are a hardy bunch, but on the whole they are friendly, helpful and cheerful. Although its a comfortable city, it has a lot going for it for residents and visitors. Its surrounded by hills, to remind you that there is some magnificent countryside not too far away. It does not rain all the time either and OK if it is wet there are still lots of things to do. Glasgow has many fascinating museums to explore. Try the Tenement House for a real sense of what life was like fifty or so years ago in Glasgow, or the Transport Museum for a fantastic collection of motor vehicles etc, and a genuine old street. Some of the best shopping in the UK is in Glasgow ...

Review of George Square (Glasgow)

The Clockwork Orange...

Advantages: Gets you around Glasgow, quick, regular service
Disadvantages: Quite expensive...

and Drama Stow College Tenement House Theatre Royal The Willow Tearooms Safety Ever since the attack at Glasgow Airport, safety stepped up a notch in Glasgow. Although, it all seems to have died down now. At the entrances and exits to every subway station, there is now bollards so no vehicles can get through. Also, for few months afterwards, there were police at many of the subway stations. I've not seen any in a while now though, apart from when there's a game on at Ibrox. I found it quite unnerving when there were police officers at the stations, it didn't make me feel any safer. But I'm sure if something where to happen, it would be better for them to be there than not. Park & Ride There are various park & ride facilities available in the hope that people will stop taking their cars into the centre of Glasgow. All you have ...
