First of all, I may as well get the shocker (for us anyway) out of the way - we stayed at Playa de Las Americas, and with all of the horror stories I heard after booking, well I wasn't keen on going. I expected to be staying in a loud, busy resort full of pubs and clubs and very little of anything Spanish. Suffice is to say we were pleasantly surprised.
**BOOKING** We had booked the holiday through Thomas Cook for approx £440 each b and b for 7 nights including flights and insurance but no transfers. That was fine as the resort is fairly near Tenerife South Airport and we hired a car so we could get about for the week. We were staying at the Mediterranean Palace Hotel, part of a 5* complex at Playa de la Camison Beach, on the outskirts of Las Americas, on the way to Los Cristianos.
**HOTEL** Very nice, the room was a little dated but clean and the food for breakfast was varied and of a high quality. There was a lovely big pool and a smaller one with outdoor jacuzzi which was very peaceful. Evening entertainment was very pleasant, usually consisting of a Spanish band and singer outside on the terrace. All in all a pleasant experience!
**RESORT** The real, big surprise. I honestly thought we would struggle to find anywhere outside of the complex which suited us. I should probably explain that our idea of a night out on hols is to sit and eat a nice meal outside with a bottle (or two!) of wine and a couple of cocktails afterwards. So we were a little concerned that we would only be able to find really busy bars to have a drink in. Where the hotel was, we found there was a lovely little strip of bars and restaurants, all very pleasant selling typical canarian dishes and lovely places for a fairly quiet drink (I mean we are still in our 20s if only just!). The only downside was that it was quite pricey, the really nice restaurants costing approx £50-60 for a 3 course meal with a bottle of wine. Our favourite was El Faro. At night my favourite thing was all of the fairy lights along the strip and the fact you could play crazy golf until midnight. Through the day we had a walk into Las Americas and Los Cristianos, both in easy reach but not so peaceful. The beach at the hotel was fantastic and there was a lovely beach bar to watch the world go by.
**EXCURSIONS** By far the most daytime activities within easy reach of the resort I have ever known. Cactus park, waterpark, camel park, to name but a few, because we had the car we travelled about more. We went to the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, to be honest there wasn't as much there as we were expecting, shops of course but then you can see that at home to be honest. While we were there we travelled to a nearby beach not publicised and kept for the locals, which was very pretty. We also went to Loro Parque, a huge park, I suppose you would compare it to a zoo over here, but most of the animals had been rescued, for example the gorillas had all been taken away from the wild as they were too violent and dominating of their groups, so had been tamed and were kept in a huge enclosure. Also this park had sealion, parrot and dolphin shows, a penguin enclosure (climatically controlled of course!) and a good sized aquarium, all in all not bad value for about 18 euros per adult (family tickets available).
**OVERALL VERDICT** Im would recommend this part of the resort to couples or families, if you are after a clubby holiday even everything is in easy reach for that side of it too. Don't be put off by the stories as we almost were! Hire a car, you can save a few pounds as it is a very easy island to drive around and the trips from the tour operators are expensive. We were warned to watch out for timeshare touts, they didn't bother us I don't think we are old enough, but if they do just say you aren't interested, they will listen to you and leave you alone.

I've always been disappointed by the Canaries, too little culture to be found (maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places). I far prefer the mainland or the Balearics. CBx

We propose some unforgettable holidays in "El Capistrano Villages", in Nerja, the privileged balcony of the Costa del Sol. "El Capistrano Villages" is, possibly, the most beautiful and exclusive Urbanisation on the Costa del Sol.
Advantages: Good weather, nice beach, choice of restaurants, good for families Disadvantages: apartment basic, rep not helpful, harassing by day trip sales people
