Terschelling has two advantages: it's villages are small-scaled and the island has something to offer for everybody. Sun lovers will enjoy the broad beach along the north coast, cyclists will love the special cycling paths along the entire island and furthermore there are plenty hotels, B&B's, restaurants and pubs. Especially in the villages West and Midsland.
Terschelling can be reached by (car) ferry from the mainland (Harlingen) or by hydrofoil from Vlieland. The car ferry docks immediately outside the village of West.
During the Oerol-festival (June) it's hard or impossible to get a hotelroom and also most camping sites will be full. If you haven't made reservations months before the festival, don't even try to find a place to sleep. Everything is packed. But if you have the chance to attent the festival, take it!
If you're only looking for a brief acquaintance with Terschelling and the other Wadden Islands, you might enjoy island hopping with special cycling tour operators like wadfietsen.nl or fiets-fun.nl (fiets is Dutch for bycicle).
