We used the Thalys to get us from Brussels to Cologne and back. We also used the ICE to get us from Cologne to Freiburg. Compared to the ICE the Thalys didn't live up to our expectations. You don't have nearly as much leg space as in the ICE (it's comparable to an airplane); it can get quite hot; there isn't enough space to put your luggage in (and as a result of this exits are sometimes blocked); the train was so cramped with people, it gives you a sense of unsafety: if something happens and people panick, it will probably be a dangerous situation; and we never had the experience that the train was particularly fast (certainly not compared to the ICE). The thalys also gave a worn out impression.
