We went to Thassos about 8 years ago so things may have changed a bit.Let's hope not for the worst. We flew from Manchester travelling in early September. After arriving at the airport we were taken by coach for a 1/2 hour dirve to the ferry crossing to Thassos island.
We were not particularly looking forward to this as it's the first one we've done and were expecting delays and hassle.I am pleased to say it was totally painless. We were dropped of at the ferry by a local taverna. Here we spent a relaxing 1/2 hour having a quiet drink whilst waiting for the ferry.I had packed shorts and a thin top in my hand luggage so used this time to truly get into holiday mode.I was glad of this as despite being Sept it was very warm. Our luggage was loaded by our travel company and taken from the ferry at the other side, put on a mini-van and was outside our accomodation when we arrived.Brilliant.
We were situated on a quiet road on the outskirts of Thassos town. Our studio was ok but the downside was there was no reception or staff if you had a problem.Unfortunately one night I did as my husband took quite poorly. There was me wandering the road(yet again!)trying to find a phone.I did find one at a garage and the staff were really helpful but did not speak much english.Problem was neither did the doctor at the receiving end so a mobile phone would not have helped.Must persevere with the Greek lessons. We did inform our rep when we found their shop in the town and she said they would sort this for future guests.A lovely greek lady came in in the morning each day to do breakfasts for the b&b peope like us.This was served on the green at the back of the studios and was really nice, both the meal and the surroundings.
From our accomodation you could travel away from Thassos town our take a 10-15minute walk into the town.Away from Thassos town was a beach called Nisterii where we spent a couple of good afternoons .The bathing was good ,there was a small taverna and it felt off the beaten track. We did walk there but it is a fair walk some friends we made whilst there hired bicycles and found this trip nice and flat.
Heading into Thassos town you come to quite a few shops-tourist and local, bars, tavernas, restaurants, banks and chemist. It has an oudoor market feel to it on a night and was busy but not too much so.Had a good atmosphere. As the ferries to the mainland come here there is a harbour.Apart from arriving here you can take trips to the mainland from here.Passing through the main area you arrive at the town beach. This is quite a good beach .It has some trees you can sit under for shade or the sunbeds. The surrounding views are quite good. The tavernas around here serve more local cuisine which is good.We found at this tme of year although it was lovely and warm the evenings could be a bit on the cool side when eating out.So take a thin fleece or something.Every afternoon the sky became a bit cloudy over the inland hills but I don't remember having any rain.
We found a good beach which was quite along but highly rewarding walk from Thassos town.If you are not bonkers like us you can get the bus.It is called Makriamos beach and has some holiday bungalows there. It is a really beautiful bay and I would quite like a holiday there.Further round from here is Golden beach which is an especially long beach of white sand in excellent condition. We travelled here on a day trip which incorporated a couple of villages.Golden bay was going to be our choice of holiday but we were put off by the travel agent who said she thought it was too quiet and out of the way.I think it would be great for a holiday for us and you if this is your thing. The scenery around is spectacular and the villages were real ,local ones.
We caught a few local buses from Thassos Town one of which we took to Limenaria at the opposite end of the island. This was a great place for a visit but very windy. It also is where a lot of germans holiday and not many english. The trip there was not too long and enabled you to have a good look at that side of the island.Limenaria had a good beach and selection of shops and eateries. It is overlooked by a ruined mansion on a cliff which has some history attached to it.We did an island trip with the rep which mainly took in the eastern side and really enjoyed this there was good scenery and quaint villages. We also did an early evening one to a village for a walkabout. That was good.We also took in a trip that took us to a monastery. The views here were spectacular. We had a great laugh on arrival as women must cover their shoulders and knees and men their knees. Now don't worry as they provide the necessary.I'd make sure you have something appropriate with you to wear unless you want to look the idiots we did.
The locals were very friendly and not quite de-localised by tourists -yet.At the time we went Thassos was a lovely relatively unspoilt island where you could let your hair down if you wanted to but could also get away from it all if you so desired. The holiday was reasonably priced and purchases on the island were not bad.Our holiday was slightly marred by my husband having a few poorly days but these things happen.
I would recommend it ,but maybe not for teenagers,Thanks for reading eiley also at dooyoo eiley123 ( copyright )
