Located on Amsterdam Avenue a few feet from Central Park (it is near 76th street) is a very pretty hotel.
I went there last summer with my girlfriend after having passed through two YMCA (the one in Jamaica St. was fairly acceptable, the other one near Columbus Circle was really horrible). When I eventually reached there I immediately felt as being in my country, in Europe.
The area is really good, one of the most quiet areas of Manhattan, a few minutes from downtown. It is perfectly linked by buses and the underground.
The place is really pretty, in may ways similar to the European style, and manages to satisfy our needs of European tourists, even for those a bit demanding.
It is a three storeys building with both single and twin bedrooms.
PRICE: mid, around 110$ for a twin room. Even though you can find more cheap ones this is an excellent value for money.
ROOM: twin rooms have two beds, but not bunk beds. It was very clean and with good furniture. It had a quiet air conditioner and a working cable TV set (with dozens of clear channels). The care for details was as high as we are used to find in European hotels, just as an example we were provided by two rolls of toilet paper wrapped in paper and a box of handkerchiefs. You can imagine the rest!
BATHROOM: for the most cheap
rooms the bathroom is shared. However there are two bathrooms on each storey, shared by average 12 people. Very clean they are cleaned twice a day. Basins work well since they are not timed and have a generous throughput.
Each bathroom can be locked from the inside and has a shower.
SECURITY: the entrance is always locked and you have to ring in order to get it opened, anyway the reception is open 24/7. The room can be locked from the inside with the provided key.
SERVICE: the staff is very kind and available for helping you also planning your visits to the city. Luggage custody is free of charge.
The only drawback is that the hotel is on 3 storeys and has no elevator. However during daytime there is always someone available to assist you carrying your luggage.
My rating is excellent for everything. It may seem exagerated, however trust me that is not easy at all to find in New York something that can suit so well to European tastes for this price. If me and my girlfriend will ever decide to stay in Manhattan, Amsterdam Inn will definitely be our choice.
However, a little bit more far away, in Queens and Brooklyn cheaper places to stay can also be found.
