The Angler’s Rest is one of three Public Houses/Restaurants in the little picturesque Village of Bamford, in an area of Derbyshire’s Peak District National Park known as the High Peak.
I visited the Angler’s Rest in Bamford recently for Sunday Lunch, although I must confess that this was not actually my first choice of venue. I had intended to visit a place called the Yorkshire Bridge, which is a popular place and has a good reputation for food. In fact, the Yorkshire Bridge was so popular that we could not find an empty table, hence we headed back up the road about a mile to the Angler’s Rest.
I have eaten at the Angler’s Rest before but this was many years ago. Back then this place served excellent food but I had heard that its standards had fallen since that time. I had however
heard that this place had recently changed owners, and since we were hungry we decided to give it the benefit of the doubt.
The sign outside promised Real Ales and Home Cooked food so things looked promising and the building is located in a lovely part of the Village, opposite one of Bamford’s three Churches. Although it is on a rather sharp bend in the road and there is no pavement for Pedestrians. If you are visiting by Car there is off the road Parking in a large car park at the rear of the building.
The interior of this Pub is lovely and cosy and it is set out in a traditional Country Pub sort of way with oak beams across the ceiling and wooden panelling along the bar area and on the walls. There are two different rooms, although the design is open plan so there is no physical division between these two rooms and it is possible to see into one room from another. The Pub was built in 1876.
As you walk into the Pub the area to the right is reserved for eating and there are two levels of floors, each with tables and chairs that are in a traditional looking dark stained wood.
The food menu is displayed on a chalkboard at the side of the Bar but since it was Sunday I had already decided that I would opt for a Sunday Roast. We ordered both our drinks and food at the bar and were asked where we preferred to sit. There were only two tables occupied so we said that we would sit up at the top. This area was no smoking.
I chose a Roast Lamb Dinner at £8 and my friend chose a Roast Beef Dinner at £7.50. We both has a Pint of Coke and the total cost came to £19.10 so the drinks must have been £1.80 each.
The food arrived within about ten minutes and was piping hot. It was served up on an enormous Plate that was a very modern looking hexagonal shaped Plate. As well as a huge amount of meat on the Plate there was a Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Potatoes, a mixture of fresh Vegetables, including Peas, Carrot, Leek and Broccoli.
All of the Meat that is served here is sourced locally and the Vegetables that are served are all Organically produced.
There was a good range of other food available as well as the Sunday Roasts and I spotted a huge Plate of Whitby Scampi. There were also a large selection of home made Sweets available, all priced at £3 each.
I was very impressed with my meal, which was a little expensive considering that a Sunday Lunch in one of the other Pubs in the Village, Ye Derwent was only £5.75. I would however definitely have no hesitation in eating here again or recommending it to others.
During my visit here I did pay a visit to the Toilets, which were spotlessly clean, although there was no disabled Toilet, or at least I did not notice one. These Toilets were however in the Restaurant side of the Pub and I suspect that there was probably another set of Toilets in the other room.

Monday - 6pm until 11pm (all day on Bank Holidays) Tuesday - 12midday until 3pm and 6pm until 11pm. Wednesday - 12midday until 3pm and 6pm until 11pm. Thursday - 12midday until 3pm and 6pm until 11pm. Friday - 12midday until 3pm and 6pm until 11pm. Saturday - 12midday until 11pm Sunday - 12midday until 10.30 pm
Meals are served at both Lunchtimes and during the Evenings and all day on Sundays. Both families and Dogs are welcome. All major Credit and Debit Cards are accepted.
