At the front of the building, is the Arches cafe, offering a chilled and trendy setting for drinks and socialising. This is reasonably small, but has a nicely intimate atmosphere, and serves both the traditional tea and coffee selection, and alcohol. The food menu offers a range of dishes mainly of Italian and Scottish origin.
EVENTS The Arches play host to many different events, covering various genres of the arts.
Visual art is displayed in the many gallery exhibitions held here, with photography, paintings, drawings and sculptures all having been displayed. Most exhibitions are free, and feature works by local artists and photographers, as well as from further afield. Competitions are help fairly often to find fresh talent too, which is always good.
Performance art is how the venue started, and this of course still features strongly on the billing. Contemporary theatre is the staple of this, with a wide range of different plays and shows on offer. Pantomime, of course, plays a huge part in proceedings this time of year, but the main appeal of the theatre going audiences to the Arches tend to be the contemporary dramas and plays that take place the rest of the year.
Music has to be one of the biggest draws for the crowds who come here, and a wide range of musical talents from all over the world have been heard echoing through the arches over the years. Many different styles of music can be heard here, from chilled out acoustic sets and the fantastic, and highly esteemed, 'Celtic Connections' Scottish music night, to World music events, as well as many great local bands, and talent from wider afield in the contemporary rock genre. 'Celtic Connections' features many famous and highly talented Scottish musicians, including Capercaleidh and Karen Matheson. A highly recommended event that is the main Scottish music session annually.
Dance music is the bread and butter though, and with all three of the best clubs in Scotland being hosted here (according to Mixmag), this is hardly surprising. These are the world famous 'Inside Out', plus 'Colours' and 'Pressure', with several other clubs also being held here. Inside out is possibly the biggest and most famous of the Glasgow club nights, happening on the last Saturday of every month. And it is this one that is officially Scotland's best club, and number 10 in a recent poll of the best nightclubs on the planet! Wow! So it is not surprising then that this event draws world class DJ's from all over the world, with everyone from Mylo, Hed Kandi, Paul Van Dyk, Marko V, to Lisa Littlewood and Eric Prydz playing a set from time to time. If you only go to one nightclub this year for a dance night, make it the Arches! The atmosphere is absolutely electric, and the other clubbers tend to be in good spirits. Entry can be pricey if you don't book early though. Around £25 on the night, but falls to under £20 with early bird specials.
Corporate events are also catered to, with a range of high-class parties available. Past events have included office parties for IKEA and Abbey National, as well as major events such as the International Mathematical Olympiad closing party, Glasgow school of art fashion show, the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards and many others. There are currently several differing themes available on request, such as WW2 bunker, Baroque dinner party and Scottish Baronial Hall. Plus they are very open to suggestions as well, and are highly accommodating to possible themes. So no matter what your company had in mind, it's possible that this venue would be able to accommodate it.
PRICES Vary widely according to event, but generally; Music: £6-£16 Theatre: 'pay what you can'(ie donation) - £10 adults, £4 children. Clubs: £4-£30 (early bird specials are highly recommended here.) Exhibitions: normally free. Corporate: Price on request.
FURTHER INFORMATION More information about all aspects of the venue, including forthcoming attractions and booking information, can be found at their excellent website; www.thearches.co.uk
Advantages: Atmospheric Disadvantages: Damp, although that will be cleared up
The Arches in Glasgow is a superb venue for the arts. Hosting theatre, modern art, music and clubbing it is one of the most atmospheric and 'hip' places to be. Built under Central Station, it is designed in 4 main arches.
I have performed in one play at The Arches, and for that to happen it was a dream come true. The theatre hosts all different types of plays from J.B. Priestly to David Grieg, from Greek tragedy to black comedy. The theatre currently ... ...do promenade performances that usues the whole spaces.
The Arches is currently in the process of being refurbished, so what it will be like at the end of the year is hard to say. But it will have a new enterance on Argyll Street, there is now daylight entering the building, it will now use all 6 possible arches and it's no doubt going to look 'hipper' than ever.
I liked The Arches because it was damp - it gave it atmosphere, now that it is being ...

Advantages: If the dish is available, then you won't be disappointed. Hats off to the kitchen! Disadvantages: Staff & managers are supposed to make guests feel special, not like an inconvenience.
I found the restaurant to be very disappointing although, it wasn't the food that let them down (which was delicious) but rather the attitude of the staff and the manager.
Almost half of the menu was unavailable on our visit which I complained about online the next day. I also complained about the waiting staff who were, in my opinion, dour-faced. The response I got suggested the menu problem was a result of being busy and running out and wasn't ... ...customer! Apparently the waitress "just looks like that". So why was she hired? Generally a profuse apology is enough without the transfer of responsibility, when it should rest with the manager. It's not the first time I've been to the Cafe Bar although I'd previously only been for a drink. The bar staff seemed, to me, untrained. The mere mention of a cocktail would have them running around looking for bottles etc. As an ex-bartender with ten years ...

Advantages: Great atmosphere, friendly people, excellent DJs, great location Disadvantages: Can get dirty
Ok, if you're into clubbing you MUST try InsideOut at The Arches in Glasgow. This occurs on the last Saturday of every month and what a wonderful night it is. Infact, it is classed as the BEST clubbing night in Glasgow.
One of the highlights, ofcourse, is the actual layout of the 'club'. It is a under Glasgow Central Station's Railway Bridge and there are 3 main arches which are occupied with different top class DJs.
You hear the music change as you enter each arch and the atmosphere is truly sensational.
The only setback is the condensation and 'mud' your feet will end up covered in - so dont wear strappy sandals!! ...

Advantages: Nice space, fairly comfortable Disadvantages: 3 times out of 10 - it will be a bad production
The Tron Theatre, situated at Trongate, Glasgow is a cosy little theatre which has been fairly recently refurbished. Having been a proscenium arch theatre (Your typical theatre with audience on three levels looking on to a stage) the main theatre has been reduced in size, getting rid of the arch and making the seating one bank - raked.
This reduction in size meant that the theatre could now have a small studio space for rehearsed readings or smaller productions.
The Tron Theatre has always had a strange relationship with audiences, while it has had some amazing productions, it also has a niggling habit to put on brand new plays, most of which end up being awful. In saying that though, most of the productions here are of a high standard. Recently it was peformed the touring production of Zine Harris' "Further Than The Furthest Thing ...
If you want a good night out and you are in Glasgow then the Arches would be a good bet. This club is situated under train lines hence the name the Arches. The interior is nothing to write home about but the people who atend this club don't seem to mind. What make's this one of the most popular club in the city is the club nights it holds. The most successful being Inside Out which is held on the last Saturday of every month. Be warned though this night sells out in advance so buy tickets early. Other night worth mentioning are Colours and Trade. The music policy varies depending on the night but it is always some sort of underground dance music ie hard house, trance, techno. If your up for a good time listening to top quality music then this place is for you. If your intrested in nice interiors and designer clothes then check out ...
