The Bear is situated at the crossroads where Bearwood High Street and Sandon road cross, directly opposite City Fruits. If you stand across the road from the pup and look up you will notice a wonderful clock tower with beautifully crafted Bears heads sticking out around the clock. I can only guess at when this pub was first built but we must be talking late 19th early 20th century sadly the upper part of the pub is all that remains of the original building. I now live in Bearwood, just around the corner from the Bear but have only visited it on a couple of occasions since its soul was blasted out of it.
I was lucky enough to visit The Bear before I moved into the area and before it was so cruelly raped by the developers. It used to be an old pub with character, a bit ragged around the edges but with a real sense of community and belonging and you could get a decent pint in there. Those days are long gone.
Now it is a theme pub because the powers that be are worried that we will only enter an establishment if there is a theme in place. The theme of the refurbished Bear is pool. It’s part of the ‘Qs’ chain and is wonderfully plastic and heartless. You’ll be pleased to hear that there are plenty of pool tables and more video screens than the clientele have eyes to look at, even the booths around the pool tables have little video screens in just to make sure that its impossible to have a conversation in any part of the pub. The beer is bland, that’s ‘real’ beer but they do have plenty of watery lager and a large selection of alcopoppy type bottles.
I’m 34 and like a pub or bar to have a bit of character whether it be modern or old and that you can have a decent drink and hear yourself talk to the person next to you and not have to deposit half a pint of spit in their ear just to say hello. This pub caters mainly for the young boy-racer crowd and their female admirers. If you like wearing Burberry and can’t leave the house without your ever so original baseball cap then The Bear is the place for you. You’ll love the way that the cigarette stained girls glare at you on your way to the bar and the flat. Washing-up liquid taste of the larger.
Of course with such a wonderful interior and witty, vibrant customers they obviously need to employ doormen? Myself and my wife along with two friends had just been for a wonderful meal at Azzari Too (just up the road) and fancied a quick drink before heading home so we thought we’d risk the Bear. It was about 22.40 so well before last orders and we were all very smart, (trousers, shoes etc) but they would not let us in. We were all relieved in a way after all we all knew how terrible a pub it is but thought we’d give it one last chance. So if after reading this you still can’t make up your mind then not to worry as the doormen will make it up for you (I think they’re only on in the evening at weekends). If you do go and enjoy it (?) then you must try the Quantum Experience (formerly the Kings Head)….damn I’ve just been informed its closed down. Oh well there must be some other pubs nearby where trainee drug dealers can cut their teeth.
In summary if you are young, dumb and of an aggressive nature the Bear is the place for you.
for an additional night. This did mean a room change, as when you make the reservation you select the room you want as well, however while normally that might be a headache, in this case we got to stay in another of the wonderful rooms. (the Washoe room on the ground floor, and I believe the shower would be suitable for wheelchair users).
The bathroom itself both had huge showers, ample toiletries, including a very thoughtful lip balm (skiers especially), and Ralph Lauren towels.
Our first wine and cheese time, and a choice of red or white wine is offered, branded with the Black Bear Inn logo and served in their own engraved glasses. The wine and cheese is available from 5pm-6pm, and is quite a civilised way to meet other guests, after a day's exploring or sporting activity.
Throughout our stay, I found it was the little touches that are ...

The Straw Bear is an annual event that takes place the 2nd weekend in January. This year it's 30th Event was 9th 10th 11th of January.
The main event is the parade through the town of Whittlesey / Whittlesea of the straw bear, followed by groups of Morris Dancers from all over the country.
They have such groups as the Pig Dyke Molly Dancers who are all in black and white, the Bourne Borderers, who have multi coloured outfits and a lot of the dancers paint their faces black for the event.
The history of the event goes back over many years to 1882 when it was first mentioned in newspapers of the day. The event continued for many years and then seemed to loose it's place in folk history until 1980's when it was decided to bring it back.
The Bear is made as it states from straw and is a sight to behold. This year I managed to ...
