The first time I went to the Big Wok was with a colleague from work, its in a side street near The Hippodrome Theatre in Birmingham, if I hadn't been taken there I would of never have gone as it quite easy to drive past. The location isn't ideal as it is quite easy to miss, but it is quite close to the bars and clubs in the Arcadian centre. We usually park in the Arcadian centre car park but if that's full there is an NCP car park right next to the Big Wok The Address: 5 Wrottesley Street, Birmingham Telephone Number: 0121 666 6800
Since being introduced I have gone back several times, its ideal if you want a cheap meal before going to theatre. Depending on time visiting you may have to queue before being able to get in. The busiest times I have found are Friday and Saturday nights also on Sunday lunchtime. Also if there is a good show on at the Hippodrome it gets very busy just before the show starts.
On entering you are shown to your table, they have quite a few tables always reminds me of the school canteen. It's no smoking downstairs and upstairs is smoking.
It is really good value for money: Lunchtime serving from 12 noon till 5pm costs £4.99 for adults, £3.00 for Children under 1.3m Children under 2 are free.
Evening Grand Buffet serving from 5pm till 11.30pm Adults cost £8.99, £5.00 for Children under 1.3m Children under 2 are free.
At lunch time there are 50 dishes to choose from. In the evening at the Grand buffet there are over 70 dishes to choose from.
There are several dishes to choose from.
Salad bar: Stating the obvious plenty of salad to chose from. Starters: Again several to chose from including 3 types of spare ribs, chips, spring rolls, prawn toast. Main Course: Plenty to choose from including, curries, sweet and sour dishes, egg foo yung. There is 2 separate counter areas one that includes sushi etc, which you would an extra pound for and also a counter that serves aromatic duck, Yuk Sung and Satays, this is only open for the evening meals. Desserts, these include Choc cake, and strawberry gateaux. There is also an ice cream machine where you can dispense your own soft ice cream.
You do need to grab your own cutlery and napkins which is available by the buffet area.
There are also plenty of reasonable priced drinks available.
After the meal you can either wait for someone to bring a bill or pay at the end of the bar. On exiting you do need to show your receipt to prove you have paid.
The service here is pretty good although when really busy the staff are quite slow clearing the tables, but that's due to no fault of the staff as they are constantly on the go.
If you go in for a birthday, the staff will come over and sing to you.
Overall good value for money, it's the ideal location to have a meal before hitting the bars and clubs in Birmingham.
There is another of the Big Wok restaurant in Lincoln with another opening in Nottingham. If you go to the website the full menu is included. www.bigwok.co.uk
