We live in Devon and had tickets for a Runrig concert in Birmingham Symphony Hall. We live out in the country so going out into the big wide world can be quite scary you know what with all the guncrime and murder in the big cities!!!
We were a bit wary of staying in the centre of Birmingham mainly due to cost, so we looked for somewhere on the edge and found Days Inn in West Bromwich, Birmingham. It is just off junction 1 of the M5 which was great and easy to find. We then took a taxi into Birmingham later on. This cost £12 each way, but thats another story!
The hotel had underground parking which made us feel that the car was secure (no need to take the wheels in with us)!. The hotel is based on several floors of a large 10 storey building, with reception on the ground floor.
Our swipe card would not open the room door and they happily exchanged it for another one.
The room itself was a double, with huge double-glazed windows looking out over the city. There was the usual facilities of television, kettle and of course the Bible.
The ensuite bathroom had an excellent power shower in it with soap and shower gel provided. If you required anything else such as toothpaste etc all you had to do was ring reception and it was free.
The whole room was clean and tidy and we had no cause for complaint. The whole layout is very similar to Travelodge or Holiday Inn.
The Bistro was open from 10am to 10pm for food and there was a Pizza Hut next door and an assortment of kebab shops nearby, along with an Aldi supermarket.
When we returned from the concert there was a security guard on the door and we had to show our room swipe card to get in and also had to use that to get through other doors into the hotel. This made us feel safe and secure.
There was a complimentary continental breakfast, but when we got downstairs the next morning, there was sausage, bacon, scrambled egg and beans, so we were well pleased with that.
The price for a double ensuite for the night was £54.25 so we were extremely please all round. We had a great time at the concert and it was great to be able to go to bed and not have to drive 3 hours to get home again and get back at 3am!
I would say that the only downside was that it was a bit noisy at 3am in the morning when people returned having an arguement and then turned their tv on full blast, but you get these things anywhere and to be honest, most of these type of hotels have paperthin walls.
On the way home we went to Cadbury World and that is a whole new review altogether!!
