We were staying in a nearby luxury lodge on a small holiday park and found inside the lodge, a folder containing useful info on the area etc. As ... ...the folder for guests to leave comments about their holiday and recommendations for places to visit.
Browsing through these, the place that was mentioned several times as a lovely place to go for a meal and a drink was The Black Swan. Best of all it was only a 10 - 15 minute walk away, so we could easily walk there and back, and also be able to have a drink. We were staying in a nearby luxury lodge on a small holiday park and found inside the lodge, a folder containing useful info on the area etc. As a nice touch, the owners had provided a section in the folder for guests to leave comments about their holiday and recommendations for places to visit.
Browsing through these, the place that was mentioned several times as a lovely place to go for a meal and a drink was The Black Swan. So with the glowing recommendations in mind, we set off to visit The Black Swan one evening during our short break.
The pub is one of two in the village. The other being The Dacre Arms, which also serves meals and had some good recommendations, but based purely on what I had read we decided upon The Black Swan.
From the outside, The Black Swan looks like one of those typical old fashioned country pubs with its white walls and tiled roof. The building has actually been there since the around 1830. There is ample car parking in the large car park to the side.
Inside, there was a large bar down one side of the pub and a games area on the other side of the bar. At the rear of the pub is a function room, which looked like it doubles up as an overspill if the dining area is busy.
Dining tables were opposite the bar. It all looked very cosy and welcoming. A few people were inside having meals but there was still a few empty tables. We were greeted warmly by a woman behind the bar and we ordered drinks before sitting down at one of the tables. The woman who served us was very friendly, asking us where we were from and how long we were here for etc. She explained to us to pop back over to the bar when ready to order food.
One of the things that had been written a few times in the folder back in our lodge about eating in The Black Swan was the warning : "Beware the portions are huge!" I can confirm that is indeed correct!
The menu was quite extensive, catering for all tastes and diets. There was a large 'chicken section' containing probably the most chicken dishes I have ever seen on a menu! My partner settled for a Steak and Chicken Combo, whilst I opted for Gammon Steak with egg. They were both cooked fresh to order and arrived at our table around 20 mins after ordering them, and the portions were large and well presented. They were both served with homemade chips, salad and peas and tasted delicious. The steak cooked exactly the way we had requested.
We did feel quite stuffed after clearing our plates and that was on an empty stomach as we had not eaten all day. I think if I'd had lunch that day, there would have been no way I could have finished my meal!
Both meals cost £8.45 so not a bad price at all, especially when taking into consideration the portion size. This seemed to be the average price of the meals on the menu.
As well as the large chicken section of the menu, there were several other grill options, as well as salads, fish and chips, pies and many other pub 'favourites'. Added to this were vegeatrian options and daily specials.
Desserts are available, but after eating the huge main course, I would think very few people would have room for dessert. We certainly didn't!
A wide range of alcoholic drinks were available including local ales, as well as soft drinks, coffee etc.
After finishing our meals, we managed another drink while psyching ourselves up for the walk back to our lodge. This was when I began wishing I had brought the car, as walking back feeling stuffed was not on the agenda when we set out!
Another thing I liked was the fact we were asked if everything was okay with our meals, when we were half way through eating them, and also I am pleased to say I didn't have a mouthful of food at the time! I often find, when out for a meal, the first forkful has hardly graced my lips when a staff member appears asking "is everything okay with your meals?" I am sure they do this on purpose, hiding somewhere, watching until you have your first mouthful of food, then pounce!
We were asked again when leaving if everything had been okay, and were thanked for visiting the pub. I replied that the meals had been lovely, we had thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and would make sure we would return again. We returned to our lodge where I added my recommendation to the list in the folder.
If ever you find yourself in Driffield, or nearby Beverley, I can thoroughly recommend a visit to The Black Swan. Just beware, the portions are huge!
