Note: As of the end of 2005 the Bolshoi is undergoing renovation works. As with most public service investment in Russia it is uncertain when the theatre will re-open. For the time being, Bolshoi Theatre productions are being held in the Malyi Theatre, just 100m or so behind the Bolshoi. The Malyi venue is far less impressive than the Bolshoi, but it's still worth a visit for the productions themselves.

The most famous theatre in Russia, with one of the most famous theatre companies in the world, the Bolshoi stands in the centre of Moscow as an homage to Tsarist opulence amid the utilitarianism of Socialist Realist architecture. By day or by night (when lights are trained upon the impressive structure, replete with horse-drawn chariot) the outside makes wonderful viewing. Inside, however, crystal glass chandeliers, velvet chairs and gilded lamps threaten to upstage the theatrical performances on stage.
I have visited the Bolshoi on two occasions, firstly to see a Russian ballet 'La Bayadere', and secondly to see a far more enjoyable production of the ballet Don Quixote. Both times the music, dancing and costume were flawless, while the atmosphere was electric throughout.
Buying tickets to the Bolshoi is not as difficult as tourist companies might have you believe. Many agencies charge ludicrous amounts of money for 'VIP' seating at major showings. However, with some rudimentary Russian skills and at a fraction of the cost, similar seats can be bought from ticket booths situated in a large number of Moscow Metro stations in the city centre. Just a tip.
Dress code is fairly formal. A large number of Russians (especially of the older generation) continue to dress up in black tie to visit the ballet, although this is becoming less and less the norm. Still, smart evening wear will ensure you blend in with the local crowd, rather than with the large number of American tourists wearing baseball caps and shorts.

Enjoy the theatre and the atmosphere. If you're not fussy about what you see there, so much the better!
