The Brecon Hotel in Rotherham was the choice of venue for my work's Christmas Party last Friday, 1st December 2006. We had left it a little late to get in anywhere and found that the Brecon was just about the only place that could accommodate our part of around 40 people.

This was my first visit to this Hotel, although since it is located on one of the main routes just outside of Rotherham it is a place that I have passed many times.

The Brecon is a well known Hotel locally. Established in 1963 it is a family run Hotel that prides itself on the reputation that it has built up over the years. It is a medium sized Hotel with 21 Rooms. All of which are en suite and have a colour TV, Radio and Tea and Coffee making facilities.

I did not stay overnight at this Hotel so I cannot really comment on the quality of the rooms other than to say that some of the Sales Reps did stay here and the feedback was good. Some of these rooms have recently been refurbished.

From the outside the Brecon Hotel is a large Georgian style building set back just off the main Moorgate road, opposite the Hospital. There is a large Car Park in front of the Hotel which extends around the sides.

The entrance is situated at the front of the building and there is a small reception area immediately inside the doorway. There are two large function rooms downstairs, the smaller of which is used to serve breakfast and meals for the residents. We had booked the larger of the two rooms and there was a separate party in the other.

The function room has its own Bar where we congregated before being called through to our tables. Bar prices were average at £2.40 for a pint of standard Lager.

The quality of the food was excellent and it was served quickly and was therefore still piping hot, which although this is the sort of service that is expected it is still quite an achievement, especially considering that the other party were eating at the same time so the four waiters were effectively catering for around 70 people yet they moved around comfortably between the two rooms.

When it comes to Christmas meals I am a bit of a traditionalist and therefore opted for Soup of the day, Turkey, and Fresh Fruit Salad for desserts. The Soup was Onion and was served with a warm Bread Roll, of which there was the option of either white or brown Bread. We were also asked if we required any extra Bread.

The Turkey was cooked to perfection, still nice and moist and not in the least bit dry. This came with all of the usual trimmings, although I was disappointed to find that the Cranberry Sauce was already on my plate. Since I am not a fan of this I would have not put this on my plate given the choice but basically I had no choice other than to just leave it there.

Coffee and mints were also available which I declined, opting for further alcoholic beverages instead from the Bar.

We ate at around 1.30PM and there was a Disco after the meal had finished which lasted until 6PM. The total cost per person was £15.95 each.

Overall I was quite impressed with both the choice of venue and the quality of the food and its service. Catering for a large number of people is never easy, especially when the first hour at the Bar had been free courtesy of the company I work for.

I would certainly recommend this place again and I would also suggest that it would be an ideal venue for a small Wedding reception since the atmosphere is friendly and quite intimate. The owner made a point of greeting everybody personally at the table and asking if everything was all right.
