The Buchanan Arms is located in the village Drymen, approximately 14 miles from Glasgow, in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. It is a former coaching inn, and although the bar dιcor harks back to these origins; the hotel itself is thoroughly modern. It boasts gym facilities, swimming pool, a sauna and even a beauty salon.
The rooms have a distinctly Scottish feel to them as well as tea and coffee, guests are provided with shortbread in the room as well. We stayed in a twin room, complete with a surprisingly large en suite bathroom (complete with complementary bath and shower gel), a TV, and free WiFi Internet access. Although it was a fairly bleak day weather-wise, the room felt very cosy and inviting, and we had a great view of the surrounding countryside from our window.
We had a dinner as part of a murder mystery event at the hotel. Guests witness a short sketch, a murder is announced, and the characters head off to investigate while everyone else heads to dinner. The actors then join you at the dinner table, and we were given the opportunity to interrogate all the players before the murderer was revealed. Even though our table got it wrong, it was still an incredibly enjoyable night. Free punch was provided at the start of the event, but it was a bit too sweet for my taste.
There were only four meal options two meat dishes, one fish and a vegetarian option, so theres not a lot of choice if you are a fussy eater. There were also two starters and three desserts to choose from. I had the soup, the vegetable stir-fry, and the fruit sorbet. I could honestly not find fault with the food at all. Naturally, drinks were not included in the cost of the meal.
Both dinner and breakfast were served in the main dining room. Breakfast consisted of a mixture of cooked and cold foods, as well as toast, tea and coffee. Check out time was unusually early 11 am but overall, we had a fantastic time.
According to their website, the Buchanan Arms has gone into administration, but is still open and trading as normal. It would be a pity to lose this hotel, as I would love to go back there.
