Advantages: Good, safe location Disadvantages: Price will increase
The Carlton is currently undergoing some major construction work, but don't let that put you off. The rooms are all in tip top condidtion following refurbishment and it is just the lobby area that is being worked on. For the happy traveller this means hugely discounted rates up until spring 2002.
The hotel is easy to find at 22 East 29th Street NewYork, NY 10016, on the corner of MadisonAvenue. The reason for the construction work, and the upcoming price hike, is that the hotel is building a new front door facing onto Madison, meaning that by the summer this will be 'The Carlton on MadisonAvenue'. This move to a landmark address is likely to mean landmark prices so get in while you can!
The hotel stands in the shadow of the Empire State building, a few blocks from Macys, close to the Flat Iron building.
Right now there is ...
Advantages: A lot to see & do, has something to offer for everyone Disadvantages: Too much to see and do, can be exhausting, expensive hotels
can see how beautiful it really is. According to some information inside the building it was refurbished in the end of the 90's and they did a great job. It looks brand new but you can see that this is made with class in the old days. When you enter from 42nd Street you get into a large room which doesn't really serve as much apart from being a "passing through" room. The main concourse has a high vaulted ceiling with beautiful decorations. Beneath this hall we found the "food court" and access to the different tracks. It is really amazing how much money they put into decorations of buildings in the old days.
We also walked by NewYork Public Library. We only stopped to look at the façade of the building and it is impressive. Another building with a striking uniqueness is of course the Flatiron building on Fifth Avenue. This building ...

Advantages: Fabulous shopping, bargains, great sights Disadvantages: You will be tired and have foot pain at the end of the trip
there is more than four people in your group you're going to need two taxis and obviously that will double your cost.
The ride into the city doesn't take long and I have to say that when we emerged from the Lincoln Tunnel into Manhattan it was everything I expected and more. Hundreds of yellow cabs, honking horns, loud noises and that was only one street in. We arrived at our hotel - the Milford Plaza on Eighth Avenue - and checked in quickly. By this time the jet lag was starting to set in a bit so we just went for a walk outside the hotel and found something to eat.
One of my first memories of NewYork was walking down the road and seeing a fire engine come out of a firehouse and speed down the road, with passers by cheering and clapping them as they went. This was in March 2004, two and a half years after 9/11, and it was ...

Manufacturer's product description
The focal point of architect David Rockwell's lobby for the Carlton on Madison Avenue is a three-story waterfall wall; water flows over a vintage photograph of the site's original 1904 hotel. That hotel featured a 30-foot, mezzanine-level, Tiffany-style domed skylight, which Rockwell restored. Although it's high-style contemporary, the lobby pays homage to the original hotel's Beaux-Arts style. Faux-suede columns protruding slightly from walls replicate stone blocks on the building's outside corners. Venetian-stucco walls include hand-stenciled panels. Cylinders of sheer fabric sheath crystal chandeliers. Recessed theatrical lighting illuminates all. Varying styles of music play in the background. A business center includes two computers offering high-speed Internet access (surcharge). This New York hotel is entirely nonsmoking.
