Manufacturer's product description
The focal point of architect David Rockwell's lobby for the Carlton on Madison Avenue is a three-story waterfall wall; water flows over a vintage photograph of the site's original 1904 hotel. That hotel featured a 30-foot, mezzanine-level, Tiffany-style domed skylight, which Rockwell restored. Although it's high-style contemporary, the lobby pays homage to the original hotel's Beaux-Arts style. Faux-suede columns protruding slightly from walls replicate stone blocks on the building's outside corners. Venetian-stucco walls include hand-stenciled panels. Cylinders of sheer fabric sheath crystal chandeliers. Recessed theatrical lighting illuminates all. Varying styles of music play in the background. A business center includes two computers offering high-speed Internet access (surcharge). This New York hotel is entirely nonsmoking.
Advantages: Good, safe location Disadvantages: Price will increase
...The Carlton is currently undergoing some major construction work, but don't let that put you off. The rooms are all in tip top condidtion following refurbishment and it is just the lobby area that is being worked on. For the happy traveller this means hugely discounted rates up until spring 2002.
The hotel is easy to find at 22 East 29th Street NewYork, NY 10016, on the corner of MadisonAvenue. The reason for the construction work, and the upcoming price hike, is that the hotel is building a new front door facing onto Madison, meaning that by the summer this will be 'The Carlton on MadisonAvenue'. This move to a landmark address is likely to mean landmark prices so get in while you can!
The hotel stands in the shadow of the Empire State building, a few blocks from Macys, close to the Flat Iron building.
Right now...

Advantages: A lot to see & do, has something to offer for everyone Disadvantages: Too much to see and do, can be exhausting, expensive hotels
...to some information inside the building it was refurbished in the end of the 90's and they did a great job. It looks brand new but you can see that this is made with class in the old days. When you enter from 42nd Street you get into a large room which doesn't really serve as much apart from being a "passing through" room. The main concourse has a high vaulted ceiling with beautiful decorations. Beneath this hall we found the "food court" and access to the different tracks. It is really amazing how much money they put into decorations of buildings in the old days.
We also walked by New York Public Library. We only stopped to look at the façade of the building and it is impressive. Another building with a striking uniqueness is of course the Flatiron building on Fifth Avenue. This building was the tallest in the world when it was completed...

Advantages: Huge Sport and Entertainment Venue Disadvantages: Busy
...On our recent visit to New York one of the things on our' to do' list was a visit to Madison Square Gardens. Whether you are a sports fan or not most people have heard of this great entertainment centre.
History
I fact there have been four Madison Square Gardens ( MSG from now on).
The First Garden 1 (1879- 1890 )
Garden 1 was situated at Madison Square; 26th Street and MadisonAvenue. It was a building without a roof and was named MSG by William Vanderbilt in 1879 and was used for horse shows, dog shows and circuses. Boxing events were also staged there.
Garden 2 ( 1890- 1925 )
Garden 2 was constructed on the same site as Garden 1 it was designed by Stanford White and contained an 8,000 seat main arena, a 1,500 seat concert hall, a 1,200 seat theatre plus the world's largest swimming pool. It was built in the Spanish...

The New Yorker is in an excellent midtown location with the subway (lines A, C & E) literally steps outside. Being on the corner of 8th Avenue and 34th Street this meant good access to Macy's, Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens and the... more
Postmodernism, eh? It's a funny old bag of fish. Even the holier-than-thou critics don't quite seem to know what it's all about. They argue whether it's
a) a revolt against modernism,
b) a progression of modernism,
c) both of these and more
or d) more
If you want to stay in Central New York then this is the hotel to book. It is actually IN Times Square! It's a huge modern hotel with over 45 floors so some of the views are great. There is a bar at the top which is a lovely place to have a drink,... more
