I am a Chapel Hill, NC native and a big fan of The Carolina Inn. In all fairness, I must disclose that I have never stayed overnight in this hotel as a guest; however, I have attended weddings, receptions, dinners and music events at the Inn and I have always had a very nice experience at this classy venue.
I am rating this hotel based on the experiences I have had personally so I therefore cannot comment on the room service or how fluffy the pillows are--I can tell you that the Inn is located in the heart of downtown Chapel Hill, next to the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It is only one block away from the main street which runs through town (Franklin St.) which boast many nice restaurants and shops.
The Inn is housed in a beautiful old building built in 1924 in traditional southern style. The Carolina Crossroads Restaurant is a 4-star restaurant in the Inn which serves excellent and sustainable meals using a variety of fresh, local ingredients. There is also a lovely afternoon tea service from Thursday-Sunday. Several ballrooms are available for rent in the Inn for weddings and other events. Every wedding reception I have attended there has been well-staffed and wonderfully decorated.
From April 2nd-October 9th there is a music program called Fridays on the Front Porch. It takes place every Friday from 5pm-8pm on the lush, green lawn in front of the Inn and guests as well as the public are welcomed to The Carolina Inn to enjoy some traditional bluegrass music from a live band. It's a great way to unwind after work--I have met friends there many a Friday evening to listen to music and order a drink from the bar. There's always a great mix of people attending, from students and families to famous old Chapel Hillians wearing Tarheel blue suits and sipping mint juleps.
Even if you decide not to stay at the Carolina Inn when you visit Chapel Hill, I would recommend stopping by when you're in town. In my opinion, the Inn really embodies old Chapel Hill and exudes a lot of southern charm. It makes for a cool juxtaposition with Franklin Street and all of the modernity encapsulated by the Uni.
