The Cavalier in London's Whetstone has changed for the better. It has been under new ownership and management since 2012 and the pub has enjoyed a huge turn-around success. The pub is a family run business, and siblings Spyros and Georgia put the emphasis on FAMILY! With friendly and inviting Greek hospitality. The beer is consistently good, and they offer two house cask ales, Doombar and London Pride and a third 'guest ale' which is changed every month. Peanuts are complimentary as is the Magic as performed by Spyros (AKA TV's Dr Magic) who is a wonderful magician and is always happy to entertain the punters.
Dogs and children are welcome. As I have mentioned before, the pub is now run by a brother and sister who have made a host of improvements in the first year of taking over. The food is comparable to any high quality restaurant and while it is not cheap, it is very good quality and value for money. The menu offers a variety of bar snacks from different corners
of the globe which includes Mexican dippers, a fantastic Greek Meze, Oriental Platter, Asian and a few more traditional English offerings such as Bangers and mash, spare ribs and probably the best burger on offer in any pub! The Laughing Cavalier burger is just stupid BIG, and is made of 100% beef and unless you are starving or a very big eater, order the normal quarter pounder Cavalier burger! Having said that, my other half got through it ...JUST! I was impressed with the amount of vegetarian offers available, and their Chef's are happy to accommodate any tweaks and special requirements a diner may have. My Hubby was also pleased to see that they offered a choice breakfasts which is served all day. The kitchen closes at 10 pm every day, but my son who works late in the City, has turned up at 10.30pm on occasion and they have always made food for him although the kitchen was officially closed. The pub does feel like it is run by a family who respects and values their customers. You are always made to feel special and more importantly, welcome.
The Garden is wonderful. Very spacious, plenty of tables both on the grass and on the patio. The car park is massive! and when we first came here was for a wake, and although a sad occasion, Georgia (the manager) looked after us very well indeed, providing not only a comfortable and sensitive environment in a private area, but also the hot and cold buffet which was provided.
We have been to a number of events at The Cavalier and these have ranged from Psychic nights featuring a host of well known TV Psychics to a wonderful night of cabaret with Lou Jordan who is 'ELVIS' to the stars! tickets were £10 and we were free to order drinks and food as required. On a Friday night, DJ Snoops provides the beats for a really good 'Disco' night and on Saturday there is Karaoke!
The Cavalier is a massive pub and if you attend a Disco night and would rather be seated away from the noise, this is made possible by the horse-show layout which allows one to have the best of both worlds. There are plenty of tables and chairs and one can dine anywhere in the pub. Comfortable sofas are in various nooks and crannies and in corners throughout the building. I must say, I was very impressed with how much Georgia and Spyros have achieved in such a small space of time. To say The Cavalier has been given a new lease of life is an understatement! Having spoken to many of the locals, the general consensus is that they have been given their local pub back.
Spyros is an animal lover and has rescued two very lovely little dogs from Romania and he tells us he has plans to establish a petting zoo for the local children to visit. His plans are to have white doves, two ducks, 6 chickens of various breeds, rabbits and if all goes to plan, a wallaby or two. We are very excited at the prospect of taking our grandchildren along to feed the animals on a Sunday afternoon.
We were never really 'pub people' before we started going to The Cavalier. It now feels like an extension of our own home. I cannot recommend it enough.
