Let me make one thing clear - i have never paid to stay at the Chester Grosvenor myself - but have stayed here for business for at least 6 weeks per year for the past 5 years.

Value for money it isnt but if you are not paying then enjoy the ride!

The hotel is centrally located in the middle of Chester - if you are driving to the hotel then you have to navigate a slightly confusing one way system but having won that challenge you park in the NCP carpark (free for hotel residents).

You enter the hotel and are treated like a film star!

The staff cannot do enough for you - reception, down on the ground floor is always manned - the doorman wears a top hat but he always smiles and says hello. Reception staff are friendly and welcoming - they are always happy to recommend restaurants or activities to do in Chester.

The hotel decor is old fashioned - like an English country house but it has recently been done. The bedrooms have a modern twist - comfortable super king sized beds, attractive sofas and a well fitted out bathroom. You get a large TV, a desk to work at too so nothing is missing. The bathroom is amazing too - a large bath. Whilst I am up there for work - my husband will often join me for a Sunday night if I have to be there early - we certainly make sure we are checked into the hotel at 12.00 and make the most of the fantastic facilities.

Tea and coffee making facilities are not in the room but if you call reception they will bring you a kettle, cups, fresh milk and a huge selection of teas / coffees / hot chocolates. Much better than buying from room service. They will also bring you an iron and ironing board - again cheaper than the laundry service (well free).

The hotel has an amazing spa and gym / pool. Treatments are discounted for hotel guests and no more expensive than in other salons. The gym is small but well equipped!

Room service is available - I love the fact that you could request a cheese and pickle sandwich and chocolate icecream ( for when you have worked really late) and the staff will bring it without being snooty or condescending. The chips are amazing too - just remember to ask for ketchup!

Breakfast is best ordered in your room - for some reason the cafe service downstairs is not too good. Breakfast is pricey but if your work is paying then who cares? The £22 continental breakfast includes fruit, yoghurt, cereal, tea / coffee / hot chocolate, juice, toast, croissant / brioche etc. Plus about 5 portions of jam / honey - wrap up some of the bread and save your self money for lunch!

The rooms are always spotless and the bathroom supplies are Molton Brown (one of my favourites!)

Overall this hotel is not cheap - but for a romantic getaway where you are treated like royalty, or for a luxurious place to stay on business you can't do better.

Forgot to mention the hotel brassirie and restaurant - both are renowned as excellent. The only problem would be that the restaurant specialises in game - so not great for vegetarian me!

Overall definitely worth blowing the budget for a treat!
