OVERVIEW: The Commercial Hotel is situated in the tiny village of St Just in the extreme west of Cornwall. It has been run by the same family for over 100 years and is a fantastic place to stay. We recently stayed here for three nights and found it to be a great base for visiting the Cornish scenery and attractions. My only concern would be that it would be a bit too far west, but there is so much to see even when just driving the country roads that you simply forget how far you are travelling. The hotel itself is just 1 mile walk from Cape Cornwall, the second most westerly peninsula behind Land's End, which itself is only about 4 miles away. There are many walks that you can do around the area surrounding the hotel and there is so much to see.
ROOMS: I was genuinely impressed and surprised how nice the rooms in the hotel were. Ours was deceptively large, with a huge double bed, ample cupboard space, great view overlooking the marketplace of St Just and a quite modern bathroom. In addition to this there was a small television, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities, and bottled water and wine. Everyday when we returned after a days exploring our room had been made up to how we first found it by the maids and all of the towels changed.
DINING: The deal that we had booked included breakfast in the morning. This was served in the conservatory / dining area, which was spacious and gazed in natural light; a very refreshing place to eat you're breakfast in the morning. Available each morning was a selection of cereals and fruit, plus fruit juices, tea and coffee and both full English breakfast or continental. I found the food to be very nice and you could have as much toast as you wanted, again with a large selection of local jams and marmalades. We never actually ate at the hotel during the daytime or evening time, but the menu seemed nice and was reasonably priced too. Those who did eat in the hotel did say that the food was great. They pride themselves on using fresh local ingredients everyday, eg they get they're fresh fish from Newlyn harbour about five miles from St Just.
GARDEN: One of the real treasures of the hotel was the garden situated at the rear. It really is larger than you would expect and has many tables and benches dotted around. Unfortunately because the weather wasn't as great as we would have hoped we weren't able to spend as much time in the garden as we would have liked.
STAFF: All of the staff at the hotel were absolutely charming. Upon arrival at the reception desk we were greeted in a very friendly way and were quickly given a guided tour of the entire hotel. We were shown to our room and told that if we needed anything not to hesitate to phone the reception desk at anytime of day or night. We were also handed a key to the front door of the hotel as well as our room key, so that if we returned late of an evening and they had already locked the door then would be able to get in. It was when they told us this that we knew we would enjoy our stay here because other hotels wouldn't have bothered to do this and would simply just lock the door at a certain time and if you weren't back the tough luck. The owner of the hotel was a great chap and always spoke with us every morning, one time when we had walked to Cape Cornwall and the rain was pouring down on the way back he was driving passed and offered us a lift back to the hotel, a very nice gesture. All of the staff were lovely and the maids in particular did a fantastic job.
SURROUNDING AREA: As I stated at the start of the review the hotel was a great base for visiting west Cornwall. For those of you who haven't been to this part of the world before there is always things to do and when the rain is pouring like it so often is this is a godsend when you can't go to the beach. We were only there for three nights but in that time managed to visit Newquay, Newquay Zoo, the Eden Project, St Michael's Mount, Land's End, Newlyn, Penzance, St Ives, the Lizard and Cape Cornwall. In addition to all of the famous attractions the pubs and restaurants of Cornwall are something to be seen. The food and selection of drinks on offer is something to be marvelled and they are very friendly places indeed, I had no complaints.
PRICES: We booked our stay at the Commercial Hotel on Lastminute.com for £75.00 per night including breakfast which I thought was good value considering how nice and pleasant the stay at the hotel was. I would definitely recommend the website for anybody booking a hotel room as the rates you can get are fantastic.
FINAL THOUGHTS: We really did have a great time at the hotel, would recommend it to others looking for a similar holiday to the one we had and will probably return in the future.
