The mystery of the sinister steps

Advantages: No football colours. Mixed crowd. Cafferys.
Disadvantages: A bit small. Can be crowded. Sinister Steps. TV.

The frost was thick on the ground, I was wandering down an absolutely freezing York Place at about dinner time and I was thinking. Wait around in the cold for a crowded bus, risk getting to my friends’ home too soon and hang around there as well and risk freezing? I tried to distract myself with other thoughts. What shall I try and tempt the readers at Ciao with next? The better distraction came in the form of the cosy looking pub on the corner ...
...a bite to eat, catch the later bus and arrive at a time when my friends were sure to be at home.

So, I walked into the reading room of Conan Doyle.

No football colours. I guess he wasn’t a sports fan, either that or the location of the pub – not very far away from where Hibs play and not that far away from Hearts play - has led to off the field confrontations before.

The steep flight of stairs ... more

Elementary, my dear drinker

Advantages: Good atmosphere, comfy seating, not too pricy
Disadvantages: Limited range of drinks

The Conan Doyle pub sits at the end of York Place, opposite Picardy Place, near where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born. Hence the pubs name - clever, aren't they ;-) . The central location and welcoming facade mean that it is popular with tourists in the evening and shoppers during the day, many of whom are tempted by the decent food. Don't be put off, though, many locals go there also. The rough theme of the pub is a Sherlock Holmes style reading ...
...too sick of it! The beer is fine, if not massive in choice, and the range of soft drinks and spirits is perfectly acceptable, as are the prices. The average clientele is definitely late twenties upwards, and the pub, though very lively, is never too rowdy. One thing to bear in mind, it does have massive TV projector screens which are unfurled for football matches so, unless you are a footie fan, time your visit wisely! ...

Art and History in Portsmouth

Advantages: Strong on local history
Disadvantages: Not good for the disabled

the stairs when I noticed an embroidery of an area of Southsea based on an Ordnance Survey map and dedicated to Thomas Ellis Owen, the architect of many of Southsea's finest nineteenth-century buildings. It was of particular interest to me because the nursery where I work is in fact housed in one of these buildings. Moreover, Annie Stunnell, who had the original idea for this embroidery, worked part-time at the nursery a few years ago. I was surprised that I hadn't known of its existence sooner. Back on the ground floor, I wandered through the final area which houses a display entitled 'A Study in Sherlock: Uncovering the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection'. This has been bequeathed to the city of Portsmouth by Richard Lancelyn Green, who is considered to be the foremost collector of Conan Doyle memorabilia. Here you can see posters, photographs ...

Review of Crowborough, East Sussex (England)

Grasslands, mountains, cities and jungles

Advantages: cheap, beautiful, diverse
Disadvantages: can be dangerous, english is not widely spoken

. From Caracas the options are endless. If you decide to trek in the Andes, Merida is a good starting point, a bustling city with all the trekking shops and guides you could want. However i do warn you that a high level of fitness and an understanding of altitude sickness is recommended for longer treks. If you prefer the jungle it is best to head to the southeast towards Canaima, which is a perfect base for an assault on Angle Falls. Whilst in this area there is also the attraction of the tepuis, or table top mountains, described by Conan-Doyle in his book the 'The Lost World'. If you really want adventure i think this is the place to go and especially Mount Roraima, where you can see unique orchids or sample the sights of Boa Vista at night (from a distance). However if you want more of a relaxing trip there is no better place than ...
