This pub may well be known to those who follow the ghost hunting programs on cable TV. We spent a night there recently to see if we could detect any ghostly activity. This review is intended to give an insight to the place and its long term non-paying guests.
Value for money --------------------------
At £20 per person per night this is one of the cheaper places to stay in an area that commonly reflects pricing that you would normally expect to find in London. Poole is not a cheap place to stay or live in.

Food and Drink -----------------------
This is an Eldridge Pope house, so quality beer is definately on the cards. They also serve all the nasty lagers, for those who can't manage proper beer. The restaurant food is excellent and very reasonably priced, whether it is for Sunday lunch or and evening meal. Seafood lovers will be delighted as they serve locally caught crab, lobster and fish.
Cleanliness --------------------
The sheets were delightfully crisp and white, the room, whilst threadbare, was spotlessly clean.
Quality of facilities --------------------------
As I have said, the whole place is in need of a refurb. the shared bathrooms are suffering from old age, stairs and banisters are wobbly and creaky. The TV worked, the lights worked, the heating sould not be turned off.
Family Friendly. ---------------------
It's a pub, children are not permitted in bars and a good thing too! the room would be OK for a family.
The Spooks. -----------------
There are supposed be several ghosts here. THere's an old disagreable gentleman, supposedly a smuggler. In the 16th century the landlord had twins who were physically and mentally disabled, and were locked away from public view. They died and it is reputed that they were buried under the cellar floor.
They can be heard playing and rattling at doors. The piano in the old room that was used for discos in the 1960s can sometimes be heard playing when the room is empty and locked.
A young girl can sometimes be seen leaning over the ballustrade, as though calling out to somebody.
We watched through the night and our DV camera did pick up some very strange light anomalies. The room never felt spooky but we were able to spot strange effects when we went through the tapes in the morning. We also caught a great oprb photo on still camera. There were several cold spots on the landings and in the bathroom
Book in for the night, ask for room three, take plenty of batteries for your cameras and an open mind. you may share the room with somebody who has been there a lot longer than anyone currently living.
