I cannot believe that this beautiful pub has not already been reviewed on Ciao. The diversity and enormity of it's clientelle would surely indicate at least an opinion or two, well here goes the first one.
The Crown is a Young's pub and as such follows in the tradition of all Young's boozers in style and content. They aim to provide a traditional, if not old fashioned, experience with satisfaction being paramount. They offer a selection of Young's ales from easy drinking 'Special' to the more robust, and stronger 'Ram Rod' or in season 'Winter Warmer', lovely. These beers can be served in a jug if requested, rather than the impersonal 'lager glass', I prefer jugs and feel that beer looks and tastes better in one.
The building itself is as imposing as a pub should be, large with high ceilings and obligatory creaking floorboards (I hope they're never replaced). The welcome is always warm and the bar staff well-trained, so waiting for service is rarely a concern. The Crown also offers a comprehensive wine list indulging both new world and contemporary tastes. The kitchen is run smoothly and efficiently by courteous staff, and manages a consistently high standard of cuisine. There is a set menu as well as regularly updated specials displayed on blackboards around the walls, thankfully vegetarians are well catered for. The wine list and menu seem made for each other and I can highly recommend their Sunday lunch with a bottle of red from their thoughtfully chosen selection.
The Crown can be found at the top of Chertsey High Street, but any local will be able to direct the thirsty to their door as the place has become, over the years, a landmark. Everyone knows where The Crown is as they've all frequented it at least once.
Personally I have been a patron of The Crown for 23 years and have never been disappointed on any visit, and travel from wherever I happen to be living at the time, sometimes up to 30 miles away.
There is no jukebox or piped music at The Crown the Landlord choosing not to inflict intrusive compilations of old chart hits on his customers. Rather the hum of lively conversation fills the air along with the pleasantly acrid scent of the occassional cigar. A perfect setting and ambience to enjoy one of the wide variety of alchoholic beverages on offer, a choice left to each individual.
Advantages: good service fast and effeceint Disadvantages: clicky atmosphere made me feel uneasy
...includes drinks and coffee.
The atmosphere wasnt very freindly though a bit clicky as its in saddleworth and was mixed with the joe public and villagers so that made me feel a bit uneasy, but i will definately visit it again in the near future, i enjoy going to different places seeing how good they are and comparing them to others, i should also say there is good parking at the back or front of the restauraunt, and they do sandwiches so it suits ...
