Crystal Not So Clear

Advantages: Reminds us of our past history
Disadvantages: How we neglect the past and historic building.

This review is on the Crystal Palace in London. I worked here with my company some three years ago at the National Sports Arena and spent a lot of my lunchtimes in and around the site which once stood the Crystal Palace and the Exhibition of 1851.

This review will be a history of the Crystal Palace and the decline of this famous Victorian landmark.

It's Conception
The design for the Crystal Palace was by Sir Joseph ...
...of glass.

The British were arguably the leaders of the Industrial Revolution and feeling very secure in its ideal that The Great Exhibition was a way of symbolising its industrial strength and military strength. The British at the time were very arrogant in the way in which they wanted to 'show' their achievements at the time to the 'less civilised' countries. In 1851 Great Britain was arguably the world leader in both its economy ... more

Crystal Museum is Toronto's New Palace

Advantages: A wonderful way to spend the day.
Disadvantages: During renovations some of the permanent galleries have been off-limits.

Originally opened to the public in 1914, the Royal Ontario Museum has always been a fascinating place to see beautiful and wonderful art treasures of the world, but now the museum itself has become one of Toronto's treasures of architecture with a recent $270 Million renovation by architect Daniel Libeskind. Known as the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal (a title bestowed mainly to recognize the main donation by the Chairman of Portland Holdings Inc, Michael Lee-Chin), the "ROM" (as the museum is known), has become a diamond in the golden up-market shopping band that is Bloor street. Toronto is quite frankly not known for its stunning architecture and more often than not, city council is accused of approving projects that would look better submerged in Lake Ontario rather than erected on the streets of the city. However, both the ROM ...

Review of Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto

Not bad, but not brilliant either

Advantages: Cheap, reasonably convienient
Disadvantages: slightly worn out, basic

I recently had a trip to London with a friend, and since I have been in hotels in and around London before, I was tasked with finding us accommodation for 3 nights. I knew that we would be using the hotel for bed and breakfast only, so wasn't going to waste our money on anything too fancy. After a little searching I found this hotel on a site at just over £30 a night, coming to £108 in total per person. This was for double, en-suit rooms with breakfast included, a great deal I thought. Overall, I was pretty much right. The hotel is far from perfect, but then I've thought the same about many hotels I've paid a fair bit more to stop in, including 4 star ones. The rooms were spacious, as expected for doubles, but basic, with a TV (5 channels only, and not a great signal despite being right near the Crystal Palace transmitter), desk, tea ...

Review of Queens Hotel, London

Princes Park, A Green Oasis

Advantages: Verdant. Close to city centre. Peaceful
Disadvantages: Not any I can think of

Liverpool, contrary to a lot of misinformed opinion, has a surprisingly large amount of green space and one of the nicest parks that is close to the city centre just has to be Princes Park. This is a verdant, expanse with some gorgeous flowers and just the place to relax for an hour or two. It was the first park in the urban area of the city and was designed by none other than Sir Joseph Paxton who became internationally famous as the architect of the Crystal Palace in London. Actually, Princes Park was his very first commission; that was back in 1842. The person who asked Paxton to design Princes Park was a very wealthy Liverpool philanthropist named Richard Vaughan Yates-he had earlier purchased 90 acres of land from the Earl of Sefton and he decided a park should be created but houses would be ...
