I have visited The Deep a couple of times now on short breaks up to Yorkshire and on each occasion have thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was a little intrigued the first time I visited by the fact that you went up a lift three floors but soon all was to be revealled....
The start of the 'tour' took you along long downward ramps showing you how life on the planet has evolved with a time line the whole way down. There were several 'stop off points' along the way which you could either read or listen to the audio-narrative on the telephone like apparatus that you can get form reception for a small fee. There was also a lot of interactive things to do along the way from touchy-feely fossils to Deep Blue One where you could 'learn how to command a submarine' - something I wasn't very good at!!!
You start the 'fish watching' at the top of the endless ocean where you will see several species of shallow water fish from rays and sharks to coral that is actually being grown at the enue to try and help preserve the coral reefs in the oceans.
Gradually you make your way down into the depths of the ocean - seeing som of the larger sharks and fish that occupy this level of the seas naturally.
And finally you walk through the underseas tunnel - which has the equivalent pressure of three elephants per square inch - and from there you can look up to the very top of this huge tank to where you started the tour. The final amazing part of the whole visit was the underwater lift - classed as th only one of its kind it takes you up inside the tank and stops half way up and being made of see through acrylic you feel that you are there with the fishes!!! Apart from the fact that they are wet and you are not!!!
There are several other sections along the way but to me the man attraction is the massive tank that spans three floors in height.
Right - down to the boring stuff - the nitty gritty....
Based on the 2006 information....
Admission is £8 per adult, £6.50 for concessions and £6 for a child over 4.Family tickets are available at £25 for a family of 4 (two adults) or £30 for a family of 5(again two adults)
Opening times are 10 till 6 daily with last admission at 5. I would say that if you like this sort of thing you need to allow up to 5 hours for the visit although many gudebooks suggest 3 -4.
You do have to pay to park (I think it was £2) but you get a ticket entitling you to 2 squid off anything in the deep so in effect parking is free if you are visiting the attraction.

Advantages: Price, more environmentally friendly option, price Disadvantages: tent pitches quite close together, VERY big site, so not much of a retreat
