The week before our disasterous trip to the Murrayfield hotel (see my op)my sons rugby team where invited to Ballina county Mayo, for a rugby tournament, as this is three hours drive from where we live we decided that an overnight stay was a must. So a group of very willing parents got together and travelled in a convoy to Southern Ireland.
Prior to our trip I had accessed all the hotels on the net and found the Downhill Inn, I had originally tried to book into their sister hotel but because of the rugby tournament and the fishing competition it was booked out and they referred me to the Downhill Inn.
The Downhill Inn is amongst Mayo's gems - priding itself on offering value for money, excellent service and quality accommodation - this family-owned and managed 3 star hotel is a real treat to discover.
After a three hour Journey we arrived, to find a very warm welcome from the hotel staff, not what we expected as our entourage comprised of about 19 teenage lads ages ranging from 15 -17 and about half a dozen very tired parents.
The hotel is tastefully decorated, the 45 well appointed triple bedrooms and two wheelchair accessible rooms offer comfort and style to todays' traveller. All rooms have bath/power shower, direct dialtelephone, cabletelevision and hairdryer.
Contemporary in design, the interior of the hotel gives a feeling of warmth and comfort with homely cosy couches sustaining the warmth of Mayos welcome, well beyond the front door.
The downhill in is located on the Sligo road onthe outskirts of Ballina in the heart of the Moy Valley region, near the river Moy which is famous for salmon fishing.
Whilst the boys went of in search of the local talent, the parents booked a meal in the restaurant which was the best meal I have tasted in a long time, the cost worked out about 20 IR£ per person and this included a few bottles of wine.
The Downhill inn is only ten minutes drive away from Enniscrone Golf links - a challenging 18 hole course, this is amongst the many excellent golf courses in the area e.g. Rosses Point, Carne-Belmullet and Ballina.
For the fishing enthusiasts there is game angling on the River Moy - Irelands premier salmon river, trout on lough Conn and Lough Cullen with sea angling in Killala Bay.
Within a 50 mile radius of the Downhill Inn is all the beauty, history and character you could wish for and expect on a West of Ireland Holiday. Some of the many attractions include, Foxford woolen mills, Ballintuber Abbey, Kylemore Abbey and Knock Shrine to name but a few.

July to September 60 IR£ March to June & Oct 52 IR£ January & February, Nov & Dec 49 IR£ There are also group discounts available as well as special offers and they can arrange golf and fishing packages on request.

I would highly recommend this hotel to any one visiting co Mayo or travelling round Ireland, If you wish to experience something a bit more upmarket with health spa's etc. then book into their sister Hotel the Downhill Hotel. The friendliness of the staff at this hotel is second to none, they could not do enough for us whilst we where there.
