A decent hotel choice for downtown Vancouver

Advantages: Great location, good facilities, great deal
Disadvantages: You'll be lucky to get the same deal

INTRODUCTION It was the first time Ms Larsbaby and myself had been to Vancouver, and without first hand experience of knowing where to stay, we had a look on the net and took this hotel booked for us by the excellent Trailfinders, which was one of their options. LOCATION The Century Plaza is pretty much was the heart of the shopping and eating area of downtown on Burrard Street and so is ideally placed for the tourist. This end of Burrard Street had several restaurants and coffee shops, as well as a Market Place supermarket which had lots of excellent foodstuffs as well as a café which serves nice paninis. Just a short walk to the north was Robson Street, which had lots of shops such as Gap & Banana Republic, and a lot of Asian restaurants. There was also an interesting looking hot dog stand very close by which ...

A hotel in downtown Calgary.

Advantages: Suite hotel in downtown Calgary with great food
Disadvantages: Some traffic noise

Our travel agent reserved a suite for us at the International Hotel in Downtown Calgary for the first night of our Canadian holiday. Opened in 1970 with 248 suites, it was only 6km from the airport and reached in about 15 minutes by taxi, but the estimated time on the airport shuttle bus was 1 hour as it stops at several hotels en route. Calgary has a structure of avenues and streets in grid formation and the hotel is on 4th Avenue Southwest, close to Chinatown and two blocks away from the Light railway for getting around the city. Reception, was bright and comfortable settees and chairs were around the long narrow area. Check in was quick and easy and a credit card was needed for incidental expenses, in no time we were directed to one of the lifts and would have been zooming our way to the 7th floor and our suite if we had realised ...

Tigers and Geckos (& lots of fish) at the Downtown Aquarium

Advantages: Tiger tiger burning bright
Disadvantages: On a busy day I think I would have hated this place

We took a trip to Colorado last May and despite staying close to Denver, we really didn't spend much time in the city. With just a couple of days to go before we flew home we thought we'd better do some intense sightseeing and set off into Denver to see as much as we could in just one day. Our final stop was a trip to the Downtown Aquarium. We'd done a bit of history at the State Capitol, had a hefty dose of culture at the Denver Art Museum and now we needed a seriously fishy experience to top off a great day out. I love big aquariums so I was quite excited to see what Denver would have to offer. However I've been to enough aquariums that I'm getting a bit picky about what I like and what I don't and I've become more than a little cynical about the ploys such places employ to try to make the already fascinating underwater world more ...
