...to have breakfast here at the weekend. We ordered our food, took a seat armed with our paper cup with our number written on it and relaxed in the layed back atmosphere. However 30 minutes later we checked to see how our breakfast was coming along and were told it was just coming. Another 10 minutes and our food arrived - ... ...The guy preparing the meals (not sure if he was the chef as he was in casuals rather than chef gear) was at best rude so we asked for a refund as we'd waited long enough really didn't want to eat there anymore. The staff behind the counter and the waitress were lovely but the guy serving up was obviously not sure what he was doing. Advantages: Relaxed and comfortable atmosphere - you wouldn't feel conspicuous spending time in here alone. Disadvantages: Can get very busy at peak times.
The Elephant House was one of the first of a wave of new-style coffee houses in Edinburgh and remains one of the best. There is an excellent selection of tea and coffee and wine and beer are available with food.
The main menu is small but each dish is well thought-out and well presented. The counter also bosts a delicious selection of sweet and savoury snacks and I always have trouble in resisting a return visit.
The main reason for my enthusiasm ... ...vaguely bohemian style while the internal layout lends itself to a relaxed and almost scholarly style, it is not unusual to see a lone person reading for hours over a few cups of coffee. Staff are helpful and friendly and there never seems to be any any problem with special requests.
Highchairs are available and,though children appear to be welcome, this is clearly an establishment aimed at a more sophisticated group. ...
