The staff are well informed, friendly and co-operative. The event is always sold out, so getting there early is well advised, and they also run a waitress service, as getting to the bar can prove somewhat difficult with 400 people squeezed in!
The music venue upstairs is probably one of the best smaller live music venues in Belfast. It regularly plays host to both larger local bands as well as touring bands of all genres, from acoustic groups to gridcore such as Napalm death. The sound is usually great, and it usually doesn’t take too long to get a pint. The beer is quite expensive though; with it being one of the most expensive bars I’ve been in recently. The gigs are usually well organised and promoted, and the venue also plays host to a number of club nights.
My main complaint with the venue, is the over zealous, ‘big-man’ attitude of the bouncers, a problem that is also prevalent in numerous other venues / bars / clubs throughout the city of Belfast. Especially at metal gigs, they deem anyone they dislike, or who makes the ‘crime’ of questioning their authority really isn’t in for a good night, or indeed, likely to get in! I personally have seen people get turned away for no reason, and I have also ‘bouncers’ beating seven shades of s**t out of the people they are paid to look after!
Overall the Empire is a great bar if you just fancy a pint, something to eat or indeed to see a live band in a great venue. Just don’t so much as breathe out of line around the bouncers if you fancy a ‘quiet night out’……
Advantages: Comedy Nite every Tuesday and the Cute Barmaids Disadvantages: Lack of Budweiser on Tap
In the home of the 'Empire Strikes Back' comedy extravaganza, you will be transported far from the often depressing rain filled streets of the city. With the well-established 'every Tuesday' top-class comedy night (be early to find a seat) sandwiched between an eventful week of live music and Friday night salsa, you are never disappointed. This bar oozes entertainment from every part of its traditionally decorated attire that will make you feel 'just ... ...the fine selection of top quality booze, you are in the place that has you destined for a good night.
To be uncharacteristically honest I wasn't really sure where to place this review. You see, the Empire has that irritating (for me but no-one else I suspect) quality of having a bar, a club, a top quality gig venue and a fast developing eaterie under its vintage roof. Ohhhh, didn't I mention that its an old converted church? So, ehhhh, I'll let ...

Advantages: Comfy, good atmosphere Disadvantages: Can get very packed
I first experienced The Empire just last week when I went to see the wonderful Ken Haddock and his band play. I must say I was very impressed. I found The Empire to be a very homely bar which is just the right size and has a good atmosphere. The comedy nights that are held there every Tuesday night are also top class and very good value for money. Althought the drinks aren't the cheapest in Belfast the food is very good value and makes up for the ...

Advantages: Plenty of culture Disadvantages: Seedy underside, ugly areas, not as good as Derry (or am I just biased?)
, albeit not a real castle and the view from Divis Mountain is panoramic. Their is the seat of contentious politics at Stormont too.Up the river Lagan we find signs of new prosperity in the new flats and the renovated St. George's Market which is back in use. You can catch a performance at the beautiful modern construction of the Waterfront Hall, that sits beside the nicer part of the river. Botanic Gardens looks beautiful on a sunny day and the City Hall is a fine example of turn-of-the-century architecture.
If you want culture their is plenty of it. In October the Belfast Festival at Queens is a cultural event second only to Edinburgh in Europe. The Empire lends itself to both music and comedy, their are a plenty of Theatres for plays like the Arts. Live music and concerts can be seen at the Ulster Hall, Kings Hall or get more intimate ...
