Why re -invent the Wheel?

Advantages: Marvellous Engineering, free visitor centre
Disadvantages: Expensive if taking a boat trip on th wheel

...my sister, which was on the Llangollen canal. From then on our family were hooked on canals. I enjoyed the peaceful countryside as we glided along the canal at about 4 miles an hour admiring the wild life and being enchanted by a kingfisher which accompanied us for quite a distance. We have since had many canal holidays all over Great Britain, although I do admit to not liking the responsibility of steering the really long narrow boats!

...in Scotland and belong to the canal society, although we no longer take such an active part as we used to. As some of you may not know much about canals I feel a little history lesson bubbling up and hope you will bear with me.

Disadvantages: Maybe a bit expensive for some

...in Northants opening and closing the locks along the river and we got talking about the Falkirk Wheel and I commented that I would love to see it so Dave organised a visit and a ride on the wheel when I went up to Edinburgh with him. So what is the Falkirk Wheel? Well it is basically a huge boat lift to move boats from the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal which is 35 metres higher and back again – but there is much more to it than that! ...
...a distance of 1.5km in the past when the canals were the main form of transport. With the onset of the railways and roads the canals fell into disrepair and the locks were eventually dismantled in 1933. The Millennium Link In more recent years the canals across the UK have seen a renaissance as people have used them for leisure and the Millennium Link project was born. In just three years the whole 112km of the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals ...

Advantages: See the worlds first canal wheel, visit Scotlands UFO capital
Disadvantages: You might be abducted by aliens

I have just visited the wheel, quite an interesting piece of engineering. If you enjoy canal boat rides then this is for you.It takes you along the forth and clyde canal and thats all i know (See jo145's review for more indepth info). If however you are interested in the third kind, then pop down the road to Bonnybridge, Scotlands UFO capital. Where there have been allegded sightings of space crafts.Unfortunately I have yet to see one, being a regular ...

Follow the wall and you will come into Callander park in Falkirk, featuring the hundreds of years old, Callander house. Which is situated within the park where you can partake in a game of 18 hole golf. For the less serious players there is crazy golf next to the very large playpark. Great day out for kids as it has, mini-karts,bouncy castles, shows occasional ...

A life on the ocean wave?

Advantages: Good, peaceful holiday but not boring
Disadvantages: You can't really get away

?). **The Boat and facilities** We hired the boat through a company now trading as UK Boat Hire (UKBoathire.com) - they previously traded as Alvechurch and you may have seen their cheerful red and green narrowboats on some of Britain's canals. We went to their base in Falkirk in Scotland (more or less at the mid point between Glasgow and Edinburgh) to collect the boat, get the basic instructions and start the holiday.
