I have just visited the wheel, quite an interesting piece of engineering. If you enjoy canal boat rides then this is for you.It takes you along the forth and clyde canal and thats all i know (See jo145's review for more indepth info). If however you are interested in the third kind, then pop down the road to Bonnybridge, Scotlands UFO capital. Where there have been allegded sightings of space crafts.Unfortunately I have yet to see one, being a regular visitor myself, heehee, having been brought up there. When there you can also visit the antonine wall up the back roads of Bonnybridge by following the Roman Rd. Follow the wall and you will come into Callander park in Falkirk, featuring the hundreds of years old, Callander house. Which is situated within the park where you can partake in a game of 18 hole golf. For the less serious players there is crazy golf next to the very large playpark. Great day out for kids as it has, mini-karts,bouncy castles, shows
occasional and a little kiosk for ice cream and treats.Or you could also take the boats or pedlo's out on the rather large pond.Behind the pond, you can go for a romantic walk in the woods and you may come across the tomb. Thought to be a burial chamber for the residents of Cally house some years ago. You can learn more about the family by entering the museum which is situated in the house.Very interesting experience. If you make it Big in Falkirk April 30th and May 1st 2005, you will be able to get a free bus ride to the wheel. Not only that, you will have the chance to see the likes of Javine (Former pop idol contestant and she is representing the UK in the Eurovision song contest). Les McKeown(Ex Bay City Roller) other former reality show people and Heather Small (M-People) Steve Brookstein (X-Factor winner).Woohoo, it would be worth your while coming up for Big in Falkirk and taking a trip to the Wheel at the same time. See http://www.biginfalkirk.com for more info.
SHOPPING
Not far away, about 2minutes walk, is the town centre, where you will find accomodation, bars, shops, clubs and the tourist office. For shopping in falkirk i'd say visit the howgate, found in the high street. It has slighlty more shops than callander square shopping precinct. For example,USC,bay trading, river island, boots, game on, woolies,HMV,claires,JSC,m and s.Or venture down the high street for the likes of Next, topshop, virgin, macdonalds.I'd recommend wetherspoons and the goose for something to eat or a little tipple.Tattoo shops, I'd say Flashpoint is the best for piercings too.Skip the dodgy ones you find.Take a journey down the retail park for bigstores like Halfords,,Next,Franky & Benny's,Pizza Hut, Maplin, homebase, tesco,Room 2,rosebys etc.Not to mention the massive cinema complex and bannatyneshealth club.
SPORT
If you fancy some sport there is a leisure pool in Camelon not far from the wheel, which also has the GX superbowl at the back, beside the more relaxed carpet bowling. Just behind these places is the train station so making life easier. If you walk to the main road you can get a bus to Falkirk easily which will take you to the bus station, right at the bottom of the high street.Or you can take the train to polmont and visit there sports complex, mostly court sports. If you like skiing, there is a dry ski slope 5minutes drive away(Polmont), you may need to ask directions.Just down the road is Grangemouth home to the massive BP petrochemicals.Where you can visit the stadium for track sports or the swimming pool at the leisure centre, which has snake slides and a gym.
NIGHTLIFE
My favourite. So you get the best deals i'll tell you whats hot and whats not. Storm nightclub, situated right at the bus station.Best for a saturday night. Has 3 rooms.Images for 60's,70's and 80's music plus grab the dj's mic.The penthouse, host place for parties and plays the same music as images but also todays music in a slighlty bigger room. The main room, large dancefloor, plenty bars and update dance tunes with a variety of old skool music too.Costs 6 pound to get in and a pound for the cloakroom.Friendly staff and regulars. Rosie o' gradys for a thursday night, friday night is closed now. It has 2 rooms, downstairs slighly cheesy tunes.BUT...upstairs we have the one and only stevie kerr from Beat 106, bangin tunes.Saturday night for Stevie though. (CLG who own Rosies are rumoured to be opening City, a Sportsters type bar, within the old cinema across from Rosies. They are meant to be keeping the picture screens so we can watch movies whilst eating???I wish they would let us know) Avoid the Martell unless your 40 something and thats all I'm gonna say on that. The best bars to start off your night are wetherspoons, great deals on drink,no music, very busy.Callander arms for a live band and karaoke later on a saturday night. The singing talent spot of Falkirk district.Live competitions. The Lane,Rialtos,BTW and Comma Bar are probably the trendiest pub's in falkirk, not many promo's happeniing wth them and they are expensive. You get good tunes, very nice decor and possibly a comfy couch if your lucky.
