The Fox House Inn is a very well known Public House within the Sheffield area and the sort of place that almost everyone knows where it is even if they have never stepped inside. There is little doubt that it is the remote location of this Pub that has made it such a well-known Landmark. The fact that it is positioned on the junction of two of the main routes into and out of the Peak District National Park may also be a contributing factor, as well as that it has stood on the same spot since the 18th Century.
The Fox House Inn stands right on the boundary of the City of Sheffield. Directly across the road and you are not only in the County of Derbyshire but also the Peak District National Park. This is one of the most remote Pubs in Sheffield the highest, standing at the edge of the Moors at 1,132 feet above Sea level.
This place has a long history. It was built in 1773 and quickly because famous as a stopping off place for Station Coaches and wagon Drivers. These days accommodation is still available but the main part of the Business is that of a traditional Country Pub serving good quality Food.
The Fox House Inn has ten Double Rooms all with en suite facilities. The current cost of a room is £49.95. All Rooms have a Television, a Telephone and Tea/Coffee making facilities. Non Smoking Rooms are available on request as are low floors that are more easily accessible by Wheelchair users.
It is recommended that if you wish to stay here then you should book well in advance due to its popularity.
As you approach the Fox House Inn you cannot fail to spot it from a quite a distance. It is a large Building, built of local Sandstone and occupies a prominent position. There is a large Car Park outside on the side and at the back of the Building. At the edge of the Car Parking areas where it is Grasses over there are plenty of Wooden Picnic Tables.
Even from the outside of the Building it is obvious that this is going to be a traditional Country Pub. The Windows are small and square in a Georgian Style but there is secondary Glazing to keep out the noise of the Traffic from the busy A625 Road outside and to also keep the heat in and the cold out.
The inside of the Pub is split into two different Rooms each with its own traditional Log burning Fire. The larger of the two Rooms is especially well equipped for serving Food and over the years this place has managed to build up quite a good reputation for Food.
There is a standard Menu that is served every day plus daily specials which are shown on a board. Prices for the Food are average. For example when I was here last Homemade Shepherd's Pie was £5.95.
The Fox House Inn also serves a nice selection of Beers including several Guest Beers. Again prices at the Bar are average, or slightly above average. A Pint of standard Lager currently costs £2.
Despite its rural, remote location the Fox House Inn is actually a lot easier to get to by Public Transport than you may think. Because it is situated just within the Sheffield boundary it means that you can travel here for free on a standard Sheffield DaySaver or Weekly Bus Ticket.
There are two First Mainline Buses that stop here. The 272 Sheffield - Castleton Bus runs every hour and the 240 Sheffield - Bakewell Bus also runs every hour.
During the Summer I have been here many times on the Bus during the evening for a few drinks in the Countryside just for the change. The last Bus back doesn't leave until almost Midnight even on a Friday and Saturday night.
The location is as below:
Fox House Inn Hathersage Road, Longshaw, Sheffield, S11 7TY
Advantages: Excellent food, atmospheric, convenient location Disadvantages: Due to being good, it gets busy in summer
...advantages is that it's probably the easiest to find of the good Peak District gastropubs coming out of Sheffield, it's bang on the main road out to Hathersage, on the sharp bend before you get to the 'surprise view' car park. This means it's the obvious place to arrange to meet up with friends or family coming from various different directions, out of the city, over from the west via Hathersage, up from Dronfield or Grindleford, all roads meet at ... ...enjoyed many a meal at the Fox House alone, in couples and in groups and always had a warm welcome, the bar area is a warren of nooks and crannies on different levels, something for all permutations of crooks and grannies. In summer you can eat outside, although the main road is a bit busy. A notable amenity of the Fox is its large car park and outside loos, although I have found these closed rather a lot of late. The big debate is always, how much ...

Quick review of The Fox House Inn, Sheffield
We stayed at The Fox for a long weekend in February, taking advantage of their 3 nights for the price of 2 offer, but even if we'd paid the full price, it still represented excellent value for money. The accomodation was the best we've ever known in that price bracket, a large double room with the added extra of a single bed the other side of a wall, also with its own television, should you fall out with your partner during your stay. (Which I defy anyone to do in such a romantic setting!) The Fox is rambling, but cosy, the bar prices reasonable, the food excellent and the staff helpful, efficient but unobtrusive. We will most definately be back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "The Fox House Inn, Sheffield"
Advantages: Fantastic views, an unusual attraction Disadvantages: Can get popular at busy times
the villages of Hathersage, Hope, Castleton and beyond.
I have never been brave enough to attempt rock climbing but I am a regular visitor to Stanage Edge because I have a great love for the outdoors. There are regular buses to the FoxHouseInn, which is right on the boundary of the city of Sheffield and I can travel to here for free on my monthly travel pass. From here it is only about a mile (1.5 Km) walk to the bottom of the Edge. I often do a circular walk over the top of the edge and over Hallam Moors and then drop down to Redmires and Lodge Walk. This round walk is a distance of about 10 miles (16 Km).
If you are reasonably active, love the outdoors and enjoy wonderful scenic views then this place is likely to appeal to you. ...
Advantages: Lots of Wildlife Disadvantages: Steep Paths
National Park, where the underlying Rock is Millstone Grit. Between these high Peaks there are a few deep, narrow, Valleys where Streams have gouged out steep Ravines. Padley Gorge is one such example of this.
Padley Gorge is accessible either from the top of the Valley, close to the FoxHouseInn that lies just within the Boundary of Sheffield or from the Village of Grindleford at the bottom.
At the top of the Valley there are miles upon miles of open, barren, Moorland with steep rocky edges. Here the A6187 Road meanders deep into the heart of the National Park towards the Hope Valley. This is a popular route that many visitors to this area take and it could be quite easy to drive straight past the top of Padley Gorge.
As a Child I came to Padley Gorge often with my Parents, paddling in the shallow Water at the top of the Gorge on hot ...
