The Fox House Inn is a very well known Public House within the Sheffield area and the sort of place that almost everyone knows where it is even if they have never stepped inside. There is little doubt that it is the remote location of this Pub that has made it such a well-known Landmark. The fact that it is positioned on the junction of two of the main routes into and out of the Peak District National Park may also be a contributing factor, as well as that it has stood on the same spot since the 18th Century.
The Fox House Inn stands right on the boundary of the City of Sheffield. Directly across the road and you are not only in the County of Derbyshire but also the Peak District National Park. This is one of the most remote Pubs in Sheffield the highest, standing at the edge of the Moors at 1,132 feet above Sea level.
This place has a long history. It was built in 1773 and quickly because famous as a stopping off place for Station Coaches and wagon Drivers. These days accommodation is still available but the main part of the Business is that of a traditional Country Pub serving good quality Food.
The Fox House Inn has ten Double Rooms all with en suite facilities. The current cost of a room is £49.95. All Rooms have a Television, a Telephone and Tea/Coffee making facilities. Non Smoking Rooms are available on request as are low floors that are more easily accessible by Wheelchair users.
It is recommended that if you wish to stay here then you should book well in advance due to its popularity.
As you approach the Fox House Inn you cannot fail to spot it from a quite a distance. It is a large Building, built of local Sandstone and occupies a prominent position. There is a large Car Park outside on the side and at the back of the Building. At the edge of the Car Parking areas where it is Grasses over there are plenty of Wooden Picnic Tables.
Even from the outside of the Building it is obvious that this is going to be a traditional Country Pub. The Windows are small and square in a Georgian Style but there is secondary Glazing to keep out the noise of the Traffic from the busy A625 Road outside and to also keep the heat in and the cold out.
The inside of the Pub is split into two different Rooms each with its own traditional Log burning Fire. The larger of the two Rooms is especially well equipped for serving Food and over the years this place has managed to build up quite a good reputation for Food.
There is a standard Menu that is served every day plus daily specials which are shown on a board. Prices for the Food are average. For example when I was here last Homemade Shepherd's Pie was £5.95.
The Fox House Inn also serves a nice selection of Beers including several Guest Beers. Again prices at the Bar are average, or slightly above average. A Pint of standard Lager currently costs £2.
Despite its rural, remote location the Fox House Inn is actually a lot easier to get to by Public Transport than you may think. Because it is situated just within the Sheffield boundary it means that you can travel here for free on a standard Sheffield DaySaver or Weekly Bus Ticket.
There are two First Mainline Buses that stop here. The 272 Sheffield - Castleton Bus runs every hour and the 240 Sheffield - Bakewell Bus also runs every hour.
During the Summer I have been here many times on the Bus during the evening for a few drinks in the Countryside just for the change. The last Bus back doesn't leave until almost Midnight even on a Friday and Saturday night.
