The Red Room - Nicci French

Many are the writers who tackle the field of the psychological thriller, but few create ... more

such a dark and compelling world as Nicci French.
The Red Room inhabits the same sinister universe
as such previous thrillers as The Memory Game and
the book that many consider to be her finest to
date, Killing Me Softly. French is concerned with
the unstable surface of reality and the malign
undercurrents of human behaviour forever
threatening to disrupt the tenuous happiness of
her characters. In The Red Room, her particular
priority is the queasy attraction of the forbidden
and the terrifying.  Kit Quinn has a job that many
would find too disturbing to tackle. Her beat is
the world of crime scenes, hospitals for the
criminally insane, the grimmer prisons. In her
latest assignment, colleagues in the police ask
for her help in what initially appears to be a
straightforward murder inquiry, in which a
youthful runaway has been killed near a London
canal. At first, the evidence points to the killer
being a man who wounded the murdered young woman,
but Kit has learned that the appearance of things
in a deceptive world may not be trusted. As she
descends deeper and deeper into a brutal
underworld of lost and exploited youngsters, she
finds herself as at risk as the young victims she
is dealing with. What makes this more than a
conventional thriller is the author's fastidious
examination of her heroine's tortured psyche. Kate
has suffered terrible wounds in a savage attack,
and there is something unhealthy about her
immersion in the kind of life that left her with
terrible scars. French is particularly sharp on
her efforts to push her life back into some kind
of conventional order. The Red Room has the
customary dangerous voyage to the centre of a
mystery that is par for the course for the genre,
but this is also a study of the troubled psyche of
a damaged heroine, and her dark world view:
Beware of beautiful days. Bad things happen on
beautiful days. It may be that when you get happy,
you get careless. Beware of having a plan. Your
gaze is focused on the plan, and that's the moment
when things start happening just outside your
range of vision ... --Barry Forshaw

Spottydog11 does Dallas!!

Advantages: Great coverage, packaging
Disadvantages: A bit pricey

Spottydog11 does Dallas!! Benefit Dallas I am definitely a Benefit convert. Having tried quite a few of their products recently I have been won over and now like to treat myself to a few of their products now and again. Benefit is an America cosmetics company founded in 1976 by twin sisters in San Francisco. The girls are called Jean and Jane. Their vision was to create makeup with a whimsical candy store type theme. Nowadays the brand has over 1,000 makeup counters in more than 25 countries. What first attracted me to the Benefit counter was the brightness and girly prettiness of it all. There range looks so fun and quirky and exciting that I had to try it. I had also heard so much about it in the beauty press and magazines and from friends that I knew it had a great reputation already and so wanted to see what all the fuss ...

Review of Benefit Dallas

Disappointed With Benefit Dallas

Advantages: Would last a very long time, with a bit of effort it can look quite natural
Disadvantages: Far too dark, doesn't blend well, expensive, feels a bit cakey

As I have mentioned in an earlier review, I am very lucky that my family all know exactly what I like and so for my christmas I received quite a few new Benefit products. This Dallas powder was one of the products I received and have used a few times over the last month. I will mention that up until I received this I was using the Benefit Georgia powder. Benefit describe this Dallas powder as being "the perfect combination of bronzer and blush". They also claim that the powder will give your complexion a "natural-looking glow that will leave you looking younger, healthier and more vibrant". These are pretty big claims, but having been pretty impressed with most of the Benefit products I have tried, I was looking forward to giving this a go. The powder comes in a square sturdy cardboard box. If you have tried any of the face ...

Review of Benefit Dallas

Benefit Dallas - A Texan glow in rainy England!!

Advantages: Unusual colour, great sculpting effect
Disadvantages: Brush not up to standard

Benefit Dallas - A Review by Kimbahop! Hi everyone!! I'm back from a long hiatus from ciao and all things reviews because unfortunately my mad student life leaves me with no time for it (and also no money to buy anything!) but I'm back now with a haul of new beauty products that I felt like I wanted to share my views on. Be warned though...since partying has become a more permanent fixture in my life, my passion for beauty products has only grown and thus my ability to ramble on about them!! The first of these reviews is going to be on a cheek bronzing product that I have used for over a year now (and cannot believe I have not reviewed) which is Benefit Dallas. Benefit, as you may or may not know, are a quite high end beauty brand qho specialise in high quality makeup packaged and marketed in a fun way, targeted I feel ...
