Thank you for your r/r/c. I'm a former air stewardess, now working in the boring Civil Service and still hunting for my dream job! Have just been offered a place at university for a nursing course September 2010!

Despite going out to all the posh bars and clubs in London my favourite place to go out is The Furnace in Swindon. It's the only 'alternative' club in Swindon. It plays a wide selection of rock, indie, emo, metal, pop, grunge, ska and punk music.
They have DJ nights which are over 18's only and on band nights 14+ year olds are allowed in until 10:30 pm when the DJ starts up again. I've been going to Furnace since I was at college and I've always had really fun nights.
Bands: They have some pretty good bands playing live. Coming up they have bands such as Napalm Death and Captain Everything playing. Band nights have a great atmosphere, it tends to be really busy and loud but also really, really fun. Recently Hell is For Heroes, Spunge and The Subways have played.
Moshing: I haven't actually moshed at Furnace for a while but it used to get quite rough and you would come home covered in bruises, ouch! I think the bouncers are quite keen to stop any of that happening these days. It could get a bit scary though!
Dancing: Dancing on the other hand is perfectly acceptable. Furnace is one of those places where no one stands around and judges you on your dance technique! My friends and I 'bop' away, we're perfectly aware we look a bit silly but we don't care, we're there to have a good time!
Inside the Club: It's quite small and hot and dark and smoky! There are two dancing area's, a downstairs with a bar and then upstairs overlooking the dance floor with another bar.
The clientele: You get all sorts of Furnace. Metal heads all dressed in black leather and chains, Goths, Emo-types, punk types etc etc There is a distinct lack of chav-types which is fantastic, they are all too scared to enter. If you want to go, you'll be fine just wearing jeans and trainers. No one will judge you. They're also a pretty friendly bunch and you soon learn to recognise the regular faces.
The staff: They are generally really friendly and helpful. The bouncers are always ready to jump into action to stop any trouble. The girls working the cloakroom and entrance have always been pleasant and chatty.
Drinks: The bar does a varied selection of drinks and they do special drink deals as well. If you want a drink it's advisable to get your hand stamped on the door, they won't serve you unless you are over 18 and have your hand stamped. When it's very busy it may take you a while to get your drink!
The toilets: They somehow manage to stay clean and fully stocked with loo roll all night.
Will you like it? If you like any of the music genres above I would say you probably would. If you're into hip-hop, R&B or typical clubbing nights out…maybe not. If you like Kerrang I would say you will definitely like The Furnace.
Beware of under-age drinking: If you don't have ID I advise you not to drink alcohol or the bouncers may find you, chuck you out and possibly ban you. The same goes for drug taking. Not recommended.
Prices: I can't remember exact prices but I think it's around £3 entry before 10pm on DJ nights and £4 after 11pm (when it starts to get busy.) It's 50p per article given into the cloakroom. Entry to live music gigs can vary from as little as £5.00 to as much as £20 for bigger acts. It's always cheaper to buy tickets in advance.
As mentioned earlier, because it doesn't get busy on DJ nights, many clubbers go to The Rolleston pub next door beforehand.
If you like the sound of The Furnace they have a website at www.thefurnace.org.uk

Bloody Hell!!! i didnt even know that this was listed. I live in a house that is actually joined to the Rollaston, which also makes the back door of the club only twenty feet from my back door. From comments below then there is at least one person here that Ive inadvertently wandered past in a drunken haze...Dave
